Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So on the subject of identifying chicks. I have this little one which was the survivor of miss Blackie's less than stellar sitting skills. The woman I bought the eggs off said that she has 41 chooks with a mix of breeds but out of the options I've narrowed it down to two possibilities. Either coronation sussex or splash Australorp. She also has blue and black australorps and double laced barnevelder. Anyone care to guess what I have?
This is my splash australorp around that age if it helps. I do think yours has more colour on the wings than I remember.

I'm with you on that one Anni. I mostly am just on this thread. I do have and look at bens thread evey now and then but that's about it for me most of the time too.

"Bens thread" ? .... is that the same as "Bens Hens" on here ?

I am having a bit of difficulty following things on BYC. Most everything I put into BYC 'search' comes up with a whole list of stuff, it would take me hours to follow or know where answers might be ( to what I want to know ).

What am I doing wrong ? ( I use a Windows PC with Google browser ) .... I always have 10 tabs on the thread ( or any pages on BYC ) ....

So - satay ... how do you quickly access e.g. 'Bens' thread ?

Yet another chick question. My nearly four week olds both seem to have developed very runny poos. I am assuming it's because I've moved them up onto dirt for the first time and they have been able to peck at that and a little grass. Does that sound like a pretty normal reaction to the change of location?

Didn't have this last time but the chick was on dirt from day one.

Do you use the subscription button? It means you get notified of new comments on a thread you are following and if they have new comments you can find it easily by clicking on your subscriptions tab. I have 3 or 4 threads I read regularly like this one and I just find them each time by going to my subscriptions (or if there have been no new comments, the where I've posted tab)

As for the search feature, yeah, you do get better at working out what to type in but it can be a lucky dip :)

Well that was possibly the best cup I've ever seen run. Australian horse, female jockey 100-1 , the Down syndrome brother/strapper. I can sense a movie coming on. Unfortunately red cordeuxe was pulled up at the 1600 and is currently at werribee vet hospital .

Such a brilliant story. I have worked with many downs kids/adults over the years they are always such happy people and given a chance really good workers.

Thanks Fancy  ... have some good friends myself,  in the U.S. - mainly emailing, and on Facebook.

Forums ( anywhere ) and YouTube - no thank you.  .... I avoid American comment ( if I can be disciplined enough - boy do they get my back up at times, they can be so very aggressive ).

I know there is much to digest - just on BYC on so many topics to do with chooks.   Have learned so much just googling and rummaging around on BYC from time to time,  but the MOST I have learned, is from you wonderful people on this thread only.   Which is why I stay here, pretty much exclusively.

And I still consider myself ( after 3 years ) a sort of barely out of kindergarten bod, when it comes to chickens.

Your beautiful garden inspired me - it really did.   Today I got out there ( managed to watch the Melbourne Cup for a few minutes ) ...  planted some more vegetables, and put up 'chicken barriers'  to all the new plants.   Now the girls can free range again, without me going off my face at their ' Mum, we are helping with the weeding' !!  Always afraid a little claw foot will get under a spade edge or something, if I allow them to free range ( read - hang about Mum's feet as close as we can get ) --- when garden duties happen.

They are kept in their run -
when gardening is done.

Cheers ......

I'm glad to hear that I was the source of your inspiration Annie. Gardening is good for the soul. I've been taking advantage of our bit of rain , and planting trees while the the ground is a little easier to dig.
I m not a huge supporter of the race industry, but I do have friends in the industry. Their horses are treated like kings. The best feed and veterinary advice on hand at all times. We had the vet here last week to treat an abcess in our newest OTTT from King island. He has been with us 6 months and she was impressed with his condition, she said it was a privilege to see them go to knowledgable homes that understood their feed and exercise requirements. My daughter was chuffed with that as she prides herself on the condition of her horses. Thoroughbreds were bred to work and many are rehomed and retrained to show jump, event and hack . Accidents happen in all disciplines but that doesn't mean that these animals are any less loved or respected than the old grey mare from many of our childhoods.
One of ours is headed off to Victoria on Monday to fulfill the dreams of a very lucky 13 year old and we know that he will be much loved. And as things go around here , just when you think you can rest a paddock, yesterday a lovely 3 year old gelding run his last race and is coming to us next month. He carries no injuries or problems , just too slow . :)

It could be. Main thing to check for at that age is blood. If you don't see any blood and they are not showing signs of illness you should be fine.

I think you guys do an amazing jobs with taking care of and rehoming horses and I agree accidents do happen. I know this first hand of late not matter how much you try to keep them out of harms way sometimes things just happen. (zeuses injury).
