Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks.  I know so little "farm stuff" and how it all works.... There is always something new to learn.

I saw a pheasant at the chook farm and asked the lady what it was.  I'd never seen one, I'd thought they were brown and ordinary, but this was brightly coloured.

Some pheasants are so brightly coloured that they have to be seen to be believed. Always something new to learn, for sure. Our shearer was here this morning and he was saying that lots of ' city ' folks are keeping a sheep or two and whilst he appreciates that we know to bring the animals in the day before and have the worming gun and feet clippers at the ready, he quite enjoys going through the ' drill ' with the newbies. He has invited my daughter to go out with him next week for a day of shearing so she can take some pics and do a story on him and his clients.

x 2 on all of the above but just wanted to add ... I do believe that, closer to the hatching date, the hen knows that she has viable eggs.  Granted only a couple of days beforehand but Cilla gets quite antsy and starts talking to her eggs heaps about 3-4 days before they hatch.

So, just maybe, if they do start to think about giving up around the 17-18 day mark, knowing the eggs are viable could be an incentive to stay put.

I had to throw penny's rotten ones out. She seemed oblivious to the fact they were dead even on day 26. Not the sharpest tool in the shed that one though lol

I could smell ' death ' in the wind and when I followed it , it led me right to the silver laced Wyandotte coop. The crows have hassled her off the eggs so much that most of them are dead in the shells. I will collect them and bury them when it is cooler.
Good news on Castiel , bloods are all good and we have ceased all medications. :)

Love the sunset shots chicken-clucky

Some nice pics. In addition to the mummy running round with my 18 bubs I now have 4 Broodies and about to set some brought eggs in my incubator- I'll have to work out what to do with all the spare chicks in a month. I guess the spare newborns can go to the pets hop, and I guess I can support the rest of the flock and try and sell at the auction in April.

Excellent news Fancy -

About Castiel who will continue now to grow in leaps and bounds ( and in leaps and bounds !! ) .....

Not such good news about your silver laced Wyandottes. Sad to know. Is there some gigantic bird netting that could stop this thieving happening.

I am actually asking all here - covering an entire chook run ( guess that would be, provided there are only a few chooks ) with bird netting. I am guessing it could be done. ??

Depends entirely on everyones' specific layout, and how many hens they have. With my 3 it might be easy, but would have to use a huge amount of netting none-the-less, as they live in different separated coops and runs. hmmm !! ( that's done to prevent murder ).

............

Well done Castiel ( and Mum mare - what is her name btw ? ) - and well done his devoted carers ( you and your family, Fancy ).

Cheers ...........

Where we used to live any of our chook run that wasn't corrugated iron was parrot mesh. Completely rat proof. Not quite mouse proof. Approx 8 sq meters. Kept 15 chooks in it.
