Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I honestly think it is individual choice - chicken by chicken.

Some announce - others don't.
Thanks, it's so interesting. I wonder why, in chicken terms, they do the yodelling? They aren't telling us, it's "chicken" what they are doing. Why would you want everyone to know you've laid an egg?
That leaves Crystal. Who laid yesterday and if she wants to lay today, will let me know.
What does she do? Come and knock and say "please open the nest boxes"?
they have reached their use by date after just 2 years.
That's really sad. If my girls don't want to/can't lay any more, they can still just run around and have fun.

lol .. the next boxes are now open for business

And yep, while she did not quite come and knock, she let me know she wanted to lay an egg. If they can not get to the nest box, there is much whinging and appealing which can be heard from inside.

So, the good news, while the nest boxes are open and Crystal is hunkered down in one, Blondie and KiKi are in the run .. will see what happens when Crystal has laid her egg and who rushes to sit on it first

Luckily Crystal does sing the egg song [sometimes] so I might be able to get it out of there quick smart before anyone gets attached

Thank you all for the well wishes, and advice too :)

Agnes did have a little nasal discharge out of the nostril on the swollen side of her face this morning, but the swelling seemed about the same as last night. I just got back from the vet, lungs sounded good, the vet felt certain the infection is localised to that area for now, and it's been caught early enough. She's on antibiotics for the next seven days in her drinking water. If no improvement can be seen in 3-4 days I'll take her back. My vets pretty good, and makes sure to follow up on the progress of the animals he sees, he's called to see how she's been doing in the past. She's in good spirits otherwise, eating and drinking, and currently having a vigorous dust bath. Unfortunately for her, she's in isolation until she's better, which she was very vocal about, my god the noise that comes out of such a little set of lungs! It's not too bad though, she's in the front yard, the others are in the back, so she's got grass to play on and scratch in. Both yards are separated by a fence, but she's in her own designated area, so she doesn't go too near the fence anyway. I've been washing hands and changing clothes too. I'm feeling pretty happy she'll be ok, and keep you all posted too. Her flock mates seem fine too, I'll be monitoring them though as well closely.

That's good to hear, while she's in iso its best to always feed her after the others so that you don't carry any cross contamination to the rest of the flock. A change of shoes would also help.

Yes it's the unfortunate truth that in the production of food animals lives are often short lived. My old girl hardly produced an egg for the last couple of years but I figured she didn't owe us anything , so lived her life out in relative luxury. :)

Thanks everyone :) It's really cheerful to read the well wishes. Here's the rascal eating the food I tipped on the grass. This is the puffy side of her face, it's not too bad as you can see, but still puffy and swollen, and I do not want it getting any worse, fingers crossed this goes away super fast. She's drunk some of her medicine, I might mix a little of it in with her pellets, since she doesn't like them dry anyway. She is super fussy, I just hope the taste of the antibiotics isn't too noticeable. She sure noticed the wormer in her water last month. It's going to be a long week though, sub-managing everyone.
