Oh no.....

In hindsight, maybe her increased vocalisation was because something wasn't "right" with her? Poor little girl, I'm so sorry for you.

Luckysmum, was it this morning when they are out of the new coop, or last night? They won't stay indoors once it's light.

Last night. I checked them again at 10.30pm and 1 was roosting on the perch in front of the door, 1 was in the nesting box, 2 roosting on sides of ramp and 3 sitting near the gate on the ground. Can't figure it out the first 2 nights they all went in.

and stayed in? How about temperature inside? What's that like? How is it ventilated? At the rear? At the front there are a couple of gaps for the roof supports. Have you got it open under the roof on the opposite side, or holes or something?

Yes they stayed in till it got light. The door is open all the time, half the floor is 25mm mesh, the back wall is up against the corrugated fence and there are gaps in the top were the roof slants. The weather is lovely and cool at night so I don't think its hot in there.

Hey, thanks everyone

It sucks that I have no idea what happened and can only wonder if it had something to do with the cat fight? Scared her etc?

potato chip you could be right about her vocalisation but she appeared seriously healthy and spunky, showed absolutely no signs of anything amiss, including laying a perfectly normal egg on Wednesday, healthy appetite, spring in her step and normal overnight poops last night up until she passed.

Just spoke to Paul about it he's going to put a window in the side opposite the door. He's going to make it a sliding window with Perspex. So we get light and air or just light. Hopefully that fixes its. He's a shift worker and he's back at work tomorrow so they will have to wait if its not right. It's supposed to rain next week. Come to think of it I think it was raining when they went in it last time. Maybe that's why they stayed in there. lol

sometimes its nothing we can foresee and it just happens. That's what makes it hard to deal with. Again we are very sad for you.

Yes, that's the worst with sudden death. Unfortunately it happens in birds. It's such a huge shock, but I like to think that at least it was quick from the patient's perspective, they didn't have to suffer from illness or infirmity. Harder on us because we don't seen it coming, but easier on them.....

Luckysmum, I wouldn't start changing anything yet. Just give them some time to get used to it. The weather is so mild, it really wouldn't bother me if my birds preferred to roost outside (I don't shut them in their house, their run is enclosed). Maybe they are squabbling about who sleeps where and that is why they weren't in there? I'd give it some time before making any changes in their digs.
