OMG, they are driving me to distraction! With the return to egg laying or close to returning to egg laying has come the squabbles and constant ‘gunna lay an egg, gunna lay an egg’ .. ‘she is in my nest box’ … ‘laid an egg, laid an egg’ .. I have been out there at least 5 times just this morning to see what all the cafuffle and caterwauling is about!

Two to three months, not a peep out of them and now they are all hyperactive and competing with each other to see who can make the most noise, kick up the most fuss etc

Edited to add .. make that at least 8 times!

Funnily enough our cat is one of those cats. The flap swings, and can be pushed open from either side, but she just didn't like it (or get it) for some reason, despite using treats and encouragement. If she did, then we wouldn't need to clip it open with the peg, and Annabelle wouldn't have taught herself a new trick. She's silly but gotta love her :)

And I'm with you on being driven to distraction! Agnes finally stopped yelling after making up her mind what nest to use. She spent half an hour wandering around the yard, and in and out of nest boxes. That yelling sets of Beatrice usually, then Esme and Annabelle. Glad Bea laid her egg yesterday as that's slightly less drama today. She spent two hours yelling at me yesterday, wanting me to hold her (which I did until she'd had enough), but I think what she really wanted was for me to somehow lay the egg for her

I'm wondering (dreading)how noisy Mabel will be when maturity hits

I need to offload some eggs to the neighbours I think.

And oh great, rain. That means wet chickens that will need drying before bedtime. (ok end rant )

You certainly have an interesting flock. They always seem to be doing something funny.

Unfortunately if they have a large load of worms onboard there is always a risk. The piparazine is not a very powerful wormer and it's safer to use it first , kill the roundworms and then follow up with the levamisole product.

Thanks. I did suspect that to be the cause, but I really didn't think she had a burden.

By the way thanks for the tip weeks back about the cockatiel. It (I wish I knew its gender) is doing ok.

MyHaven ........ that is exactly what I use, with little success - as they hate the colour and taste, but eventually I think they drink quite a bit of it, if left there for 36 hours.   Ideally any wormer given should be completely ingested, so I figure I have kind of 3/4 wormed my chookies ... over their almost 4 years.

I doubt that product would have had anything to do with the demise of your Australorp Banty.   Unless she was specifically allergic to it ( do chickens suffer allergies ? ) ... That product is levamisole hydrochloride - as mentioned several times in previous posts.

Am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Australorp - you certainly  have had a worrying year with your hens.

...............

Thanks AB, I don't have any trouble getting my chickens to drink any meds in their water. Coloured or clear, they drink it. Lucky I guess.

Thanks, Banty was new to the flock but a real sweetie and a brilliant layer. I do miss her. And yes I have had a worrying year plus alright, but I am determined that has turned around. I've had a few little wins, raffles and the like. I put my dorkings on gumtree as a trio and sold 15 chickens from the one add. I sold a trio of brahmas and a few purebred laying hens and pols of different breeds. The person knew about respiratory infections and carrier status so it was wonderful. As you may remember I am way over my limit. So nice for some of them to go to a breeding home. See? Things have turned around. I did look forward to no crowing the next morning after my dorking roo left, but the buttercup (who I bought as a girl) started. Lovely sound - I just love it.

Cheers

Good morning folks

Fizzybelle yeah, I hear ya with the yelling setting them off .. same here. It only takes one to start the ‘I am gunna lay an egg’ routine and they all commiserate and join in

sjturner79 I think the best way to describe the Bambrook Bantams flock is ‘similar to children’.

You know the child that throws itself down in the shopping isle and kicks and screams because it can not have what it wants? That’s my gals!
wink.png

You know the child that tries to delay going to bed as long as possible and then when it finally goes to bed, disrupts its sleeping siblings? That’s my gals!
wink.png

You know the child “Mum, mum, mum, mum, mum, Muuuuuuuummmmmm!”? That’s my gals!

MyHaven I am so very pleased to read that things are on the improve for you

For the first time in over 4 months, we got two eggs in one day, one from Crystal and one from Blondie and also for the first time in as many months, I do not need to buy eggs this week to scramble and feed back to the gals, we have ½ dozen in the fridge .. well done Princesses!

Chuckie [butcher bird] continues to visit every afternoon at free range time. He was not very impressed yesterday because the girls did not leave him much in the way of treats so I popped a meal worm in the left overs when the girls were not looking; I think he enjoyed it
big_smile.png

Mr Floppy Ears [wandering cat] paid a visit yesterday also, after a lengthy absence. Hubby was outside working under the gazebo and supervising free range. I was inside and Syba alerted me to something happening by racing to the back door .. I got outside in time to see Mr Floppy Ears sauntering across the back lawn and towards the fence which he hopped over. The girls had spotted him and were standing to attention and growling; except for Dusty that is .. Dusty was striding across the lawn towards him, full of business .. silly chicken! That folks is why free range here is always supervised

On the subject of cats, we had all the doors and windows closed last night and were watching the television. Syba, who was asleep on my lap, jumped to attention, raced to the window and was growling at something [probably another cat or a possum] walking up our path. I have no idea how he heard or sensed it, but it is amazing that he can, even when sleeping!
