Good morning folks

Woo hoo appps congrats on the egg count!

It is nice to be getting some eggs. I am not sure LuLu is ever going to lay again; we have not had an egg from her since the 13th of December. The other four have returned to laying, some regular and some sporadic but at least I am not having to buy eggs to scramble and feed back to them.

Looking back on the spreadsheet:
April produced 17 eggs, 14 of those were KiKi’s and as you know, she is gone now.
So, 5 bantams …
May produced 0 eggs.
June produced 0 eggs.
July produced 3 eggs.
Just 2 weeks into August we have already seen 16 eggs and as I type, Crystal is laying number 17 and Cilla is doing the ‘gunna lay an egg’ routine.

Good luck with the hatch Ash .. nice full bator!

Fizzybelle yep, Crystal’s ‘I want out for free range’ is the loudest and most demanding. She can start up anywhere around the 3pm mark when free range is not until I finish work at 4pm. Her demanding causes the others to join in and it can be quite distracting when trying to work. At least that time of the day I do not have to worry about the neighbours too much.

KiKi’s starting at dawn was a problem. Who knew such a little chicken could be so loud?

It could be hormonal or the weather. For months I did not hear a peep out of my gals during the day but since the slightly warmer nights/mornings have returned and they have returned to laying, there is definitely more vocalising and not just because they have laid an egg. They are spending more time in the run now and less in the coop.

Your little monsters are very pretty!

I know it is a generalisation but I will think long and hard before having Silkie’s or Silkie mixes again as, in my experience, they have been the loudest birds in the flock. The Pekins have been the quietest with Dusty, bantam Langshan, kinda middle of the road. She can get a bit loud on the ‘gunna lay an egg’ whinge but not enough to annoy the neighbours I think.

Anniebee Friday leftovers from the girls were rice and sardines .. Chucky took one peck at the sardines, dropped it and took off! He did not come back until Saturday afternoon when he seemed more pleased with the hamburger mince on offer
wink.png

He was, however, a little naughty yesterday in that he swooped Crystal and Blondie. He did not touch them at all, just flew fast and low over them
hmm.png
He is not afraid of me sitting near the food bowl when he comes for treats but he was afraid of Dusty when she chased him off with neck feathers raised, full of business.

The Turtle Doves will have to be careful I think. Chucky and a crested dove were having a staring stand-off and while an approaching Dusty broke it up, I do not think it will be long before Chucky has the doves under control

I am sorry to read of your dilemma with Sonya; poor Sonya!

Yeah, I am not a fan of the head cone either but sometimes it is a necessary evil. I too have not heard of adhesive bandage on stitches. Totally an outsider looking in judgement on my part, but the Vet being the “chosen vet”, having scored the contract for some carer dogs, may have resorted to ‘resting on his laurels’?

When my Charlie Bear was spayed and I brought her home from the Vets, she whimpered constantly and refused to move for the whole of the afternoon and evening and I had to put her in the car and take her back to the Vet the next morning; thinking the stitches may be pulling or something not quite right. The Vet checked her thoroughly and found everything to be OK .. she just did not cope well with the whole thing and refusing to move was her way of dealing with it. She required another visit to the Vet when she managed to pull one of the stiches out when I was not looking but they were not too concerned about it as there are internal sutures also and she had only chewed one external.

Anyways, I waffle. I guess the only thing you can do with Sonya is what your are currently doing, sitting with her for company, reassuring her that all is OK. Any chance you can leave the collar off while keeping a very close eye on her and only pop it back on when she really needs it?

If it is just the fact that she is head shy and that is why it is upsetting her, you can get soft collars which do not enclose the head like the cones:

Could you fashion a loose fitting body sock? I am thinking something elasticated at both ends but loose around the stitches to provide air? Or refashion an old T-shirt to protect the stitches while allowing air flow but also allowing her head to be free from restraint?

My train of thought is rather than upset her by using a head cone to stop her pulling the stitches, fashion something to protect the stitches.

@Teila. I've never thought to keep a monthly tally. That would be quite interesting. I know I looked at my empty feed bin this morning and thought thank goodness we are finally getting eggs for all this feed they are scoffing! Between feeding them and buying eggs you do wonder why you bother sometimes sigh.

Hey appps

My tally is nothing technical and only takes a few seconds to fill out at the end of the day but it is a good record. I also use it to keep track of who is broody and when they are broken, who is moulting, soft shells etc:

It also has dates of birth, first egg, worming due:

Teila .... what a fantastic set up you have there - on Excel ?

It is good to keep records. Good onya ....

with only 3 birds now, I mark with a child safe pen, date of egg laying on the egg - and it is not hard to tell the difference between
who laid what. Occasionally it is a bit difficult between Molly and Mandy. If Molly comes back to her normal way of doing things, hers will return to a pretty pink ( if she ever gets started again ) ... while Mandy's will be brownish or terra cotta spots on beige. Mindy has been laying olive/green eggs since her return to laying. I expect they will get bluer over time.

Cheers ......

Teila .... thank you so very much for the advice for Sonya .... it is much appreciated.

Tend to agree with you about the vets. Its' possible they do things for the programme, at a reduced cost or even pro-bono. They have a list of vets who they prefer people to take their dogs to, however, on one occasion we bit the bullet one Sunday and took her to our own vet - close by, when she had passed blood after diarrhoea ( however, blood spots apparently a common thing for little puppies ). We paid - they re-imbursed us accordingly. But they were not exactly thrilled with our choice, though, reminding us to "try and always take her to one on the list" even though the closest of those is 20 minutes away. Ours ? - 4 minutes. And it did not cost much at all, for a Sunday.

Putting the plastic collar on, is the biggest problem because of her head shyness ( which is quite odd ). It had been on her, and I found another one here ( from heaven knows when - for a smaller dog ?? ) ... so figured that might be better. In the few minutes the large one was off, was when she had a go at the stitches, so we had to put it back on her with huge panic from her ( and Neil ). And there it remains until stitches-remove day.

However, I am pleased to report that she seems much more settled today and is moving around calmly enough, when not sleeping. And the sitting bit - not moving bit - exactly the same as you mentioned about your Charlie Bear. Must be the way they deal with pain, discomfort and anything unusual ?, although I have not seen it before, except immediately after surgery. Thanks too for the pix of the different collars. I wondered about getting something soft, until I remembered what she has done previously with both plastic tags ( Central Animal Records + Yarra Ranges Shire tags ) that hung from her normal collar. Wrecked one, and the other ( chewed, not broken ) will have to hang ON the collar, not from it when all this stitches business is over. The programme can pay for one replacement. She has resumed passing her water and poop, where she should, and goes out by herself - more confidently.

Excellent idea about the loose fitting T-shirt. Had a loose fitting old windcheater on our Murphy Brown ... when she was weaning her 7 puppies. They kept at her continually ( naturally ) so we had to cover up the teats. Her front legs were in the arms with elastic around he hind quarters to keep it in place. Worked well. I hand milked her a little each day, so's she wouldn't get mastitis. Took about a week before they got the message - they were onto soft food by that time, and were being introduced a little, to weakened commercial puppy milk .

**********

I am glad to hear that Dusty is living up to her reputation of 'protector of all she sees'. Chucky is becoming cheekier, and quite possibly ( but not necessarily ) developing a "she's all mine" attitude, where you are concerned, so will try and keep your chickens out of the picture. Trust he is not clacking that beak of his in his swoops - you would hear it if he does. Similar to the magpie, they have a slight curve at the end of the top beak ... which can inflict injury. I think all meat eating birds, have some kind of curved top beak. Maggies are 100% accurate when having a go. Used to occasionally throw a small ball of meat into the air, and whoever was handy, NEVER missed catching it in a lightning fast move.

Growl loudly at him if he does it again. "NOOOO" No doubt Dusty will assist. !! Some reading this will think I am quite nuts, but it would be the change in your voice tone that might get his attention - to not continue. Worth a try anyway. I am guessing you have spoken quietly and gently to him for a while now. Just a thought ....

Many thanks again for your thought and consideration .... and I hope you are feeling way better today, from your chills and ills virus thing.

Cheers ......

Good morning folks :frow

First up … Shaming Time! So, I have a cold and my voice has developed a rather hoarse/raspy tone. Most loved ones would be offering hugs, chicken soup, hot drink, sympathy etc .. not beloved hubby, he is walking around the house going "squawk" "squawk" whenever I talk to him! LOL :lau

Anyways, that is one of the reasons I have been AWOL for a few days, feeling a little under the weather and of course, with such good timing, work has been really busy.

Anniebee thank you for the clarification.

I have seen that video but thank you for sharing it .. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it again.  Such a beautiful mumma cat.

Chucky continues to visit every afternoon and no sign of the adult bird again.  It has only been spotted that one time with the carcass.

Because I have been feeling crook and flat out working, I did manage to knock off at 3pm yesterday instead of 4.  So, I let the girls out early and Chucky was sitting in the Mango Tree, singing up a storm.  He has a beautiful voice.  I walked up and talked to him and he kept singing away.

PS.  He is not a fan of sardines ;)

appps In answer to the plans for the spring hatching season.  I have no plans but I am fairly sure that my broody bunch have some plans of their own ;)  :lau

Fizzybelle My Silkie, Tina [RIP sweet girl] would do Peacock impersonations when she was brooding; she would sit quietly on the nest but whenever she took a break she would stand in the middle of her run and screech like a Peacock.

KiKi [RIP also] and Crystal are Silkie X’s and yep, very loud and duck like.  You can not mistake Crystal’s voice.  Imagine a duck doing the egg song :lau

MyHaven congrats on the Ara egg!

Hi, are you sure Chucky is a juvinile? I couldn't really see him in the photos but I have one that looks just like that at my place. He's just a different type.
