Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Totally off topic, and I'm not even Australian, but just what is "that funny little island"? :/

Tasmania, my island home. :)
That's us under 'down under '

sweetbeak I love your roosters.

Teila love the photos. They look very happy. My hens get the white occasionally too I'll be interested to see what anyone else says too. I think any animal would be happy to live with you, you feed and look after your animals really well.

Anniebee I hope the weather has improved for you. I hope Mandy is picking up now.

Satay I think snakes are interesting too. Just more interesting when they are not in my backyard.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.
We managed to rehome 4 more hens yesterday, only about 60 to go.

Though my husband keeps saying "no hurry".
I have about 7 broodies now, they are not moving the on when I'm at work. So they sit on anything they can.

Thanks all for the good wishes for Mandy. .... she is still a bit 'iffy' and I think will remain that way for all of her days.

Will give her a break from the anti-inflammatories now, for about a week, ( advising Avian vet of that, as she wanted to know how Mandy is doing, by email ) - and see if there is any difference and how long it takes - Depending on that, is when I put her back onto a/i's. I think they have helped a lot though. And I think she is a hen that just loves to 'sit and nap' as much as anything that is bothering her. She has developed 'habits' ... and as soon as she is resting on the ground or in her bed, her tail goes straight up - which means to me that she is at least comfortable.

............

Has anyone ever wished they could actually have a broody ? ....

I am sooo hoping Mindy is about to become broody. Oh how I hope. It will stop her laying her ( soft-shelled or any type ) eggs - nothing has helped that - and I am worried that she might get an egg stuck somewhere in her internal workings. She is not eating as much, her comb has lightened, and she is sitting a lot in her nest.

But - she has managed to drop soft-shells the past 10 days or so, with 2 days off, and two that were good / ok,. She is strictly now on only layer pellets ( which should provide all the calcium she needs ) .... water with some soluble calcium in it ( although still thinking that one through - not 100% sure ) .Off the ACV .. and I will keep her locked up for a half day at a time - so's ( hopefully ) she gets bored, and eats more layer pellets..

She is however, still as mad as a hatter. !!

... wants out to feed on grass and free range tid-bits, and shrieks her displeasure at not being permitted - [ sorry Mindy - no go. ]

.......... The weather did improve, however according to weather forecasts, we are back to winter tomorrow with low temps, rain and hail again.
somad.gif
.....and snow down to 900 metres ????

Cheers all ......

LuckysMum, once you rehome the 60, how many chickens will you be left with afterwards? And it sounds like you've got a good, chicken enabling husband there

Anniebee, I don't know what to suggest for Mindy. My Annabelle is doing the same, laying soft shelled eggs, except she's otherwise fine. It was suggested to me she may be heading into a molt due to her age, though I don't think that would be the case for Mindy as you mention she's gone off her food a little. Just keep you're vet informed I guess is the best bet, of what's going on. Also, my Araucana is absolutely mad too! Mabel seems to have perpetual energy, and is always running around the yard, talking to herself and anyone that'll listen. Never dull that's for sure. She stops only to eat, poo, lay eggs (though that takes a lot of fussing about) and for cuddles.

Had a sudden wild storm here in Brissy this arvo, which showed me that I need to get tarps for the sides of the chicken coop to deal with strong wind and rain blowing in. I had to blow dry chickens before bed again, though this time they weren't at fault as all were rounded up before it started.

This weather is driving me mad. The wind picked my little Broodies coop up and turned it on its roof. Poor little hen has survived a tree falling on her coop and now this. 2 x chicks have hatched but after the other eggs were landed heavily in this last debacle, I don't hold out much hope for them. The ground is absolutely water logged.

We got a storm too though not much rain here but the wind coming down the hill from the neighbours above was so loud.

Sounds like the crazy winds are all over oz at the moment.

Good morning folks

Congrats on the gradual rehoming LuckysMum. 7 broodies … ouch!

Anniebee I confess to hoping that a couple of my gals would go broody so that they would just sit quietly on the nest as opposed to announcing to all and sundry that they require attention of some sort

Fizzybelle like you I rounded everyone up just before the rains hit but even though it was not quite roost time, they all wandered up and ramp and went to bed nice and dry. We had two quite strong gusts of wind before the rain but just those two, then rain, then gone .. over in 30mins or so.

Gees Fancy your poor little hen!

That sure is some crazy weather anni. You can keep your snow. I wouldn't mind some more rain though.
