Hi... I hope someone can advise me on one of my Hamburgh Bantams ...I got them from a breeder who told me they were overcrowded and had lost some feathers from 'bullying'....happily the feathers are going back and I have dusted them for mites. But one of them has a yellowish scale on her ear lopes ...see photo.... can someone please advise what it is and how to treat

Hi Susan, welcome. In the pics it looks like lice , they are a yellow colour. Can you pick one off?
The other condition that can cause yellow crusts is fowl pox. Is there any secretion coming from the ear?

Hi, I'm in Hervey Bay and very new to all this - we have been trying our first batch of eggs in an incubator (as hen stopped being broody) and hasn't been very successful. One egg disappeared from under hen on day 2(she was separated from others) and turned up on day 12 in chicken coop, with dead partially formed chick inside (it's hot and humid here and no other broody hens, so we placed remaining eggs in incubator. Our main problem was humidity, trying to reduce it- at times we had 80% outside - anyway a couple of eggs died, one never started, and we were left with 2 at lockdown. One hatched today (day 22) and other has no movement, no chirping etc and we're pretty sure it's dead so I may have to go buy some chicks to keep poor Barney (barnevelder) company.

On a totally different subject, has anyone got any tips on using a cold brooder? Our day temps are over 30 constantly and night rarely drops below 20C.

Thank you for responding. There is no sign of discharge. I did pick one off it looks like a scale (like aphids) but nothing living under it. I did take a photo. [QUOTE="Fancychooklady, post: 17797891, member: 0"]

Welcome! Love barnys.

I'm not an expert on incubating. But parts of my house get quite hot. I put it in a cooler spot on the east side of the house and brisbane can get humid too. People who incubate more than I will be able to tell you better. The temps you mention aren't too high and as your incubator should have a setting temps in the low 30's should not be a problem as they are not hotter than incubation. My incubator also controls the humidity as it has a fan on it to circulate the temp. If the humidity is too high I use less water. There has been times where the hygrometer has read a lower humidity inside the incubator than out. I think fluctuations in temperature are a problem.

Good luck. Keep us posted and we like photos.

Cheers

I've never heard of a cold brooder. If you can get the incumbator stable enough to hatch the eggs then use an oversized brooder with a thermostat and keep it in one of the cooler rooms of the house.
If it doesn't get over 37c then you can use heat overnight or when it's below 30c for the first week and leave them heat free.
