Satay Sorry to hear about miss frizz

Sounds like she had a good long happy life thanks to you.

Some of mine squat too. Lucky just comes up to you and waits for a pat, but if your a girl she will peck you for your efforts but not the men. haha

Oh great. The Hawks have discovered our run. Had one fly low in circles over it about a week ago (chooks were oblivious) and then yesterday hubby walked outside after hearing the chooks squaking and one flew off from we assume, sitting on the top of their run. They were all in hiding.

My hamburgs will let my granddaughters pick them up. The only other ones they can pick up are the australorps and the silkies, they were handled by them from hatching, though the Australorps are a bit big for them now.

That's one of my girls her names Dotty she lets the girls pick her up and cuddle her. They even held her while I cut the nails. They are so docile, but I'm not sure if that's normal.

I think our chickens have their own personalities they don't seem to know what their breed is supposed to be like.
They just behave as they want regardless of what they are meant to be.

Nooooo you're making it harder! :p So your Hamburgs were handled when they were chicks? I'd need to track down chicks then If I got one. I'm really caving now as I've really liked the breed for ages. Tough decisions!! >_<

Sorry for your loss Satay, but you're right, 10 years is a really good run for a chicken! And she had a good life with you, that's for sure :)

Fancy, congrats on the little fuzzy butts!!

l have taken action to avoid this and have installed green hothouse mesh over the runs where the younger ones are.

to ozbird ... you will enjoy your time here - guaranteed.

,,,,,,,,,,

Satay - so sorry to hear of Miss Fizz passing away - but as you said, she had a good innings, no doubt to your excellent care of her and all your birds.

She had a good long life.

,,,,,,,,,,

appps .... sure hope you can find a good deterrent to the hawk who is eyeing off your chickens. ... the green shade cloth sounds good ( suggested by ozbird ).

Other than that - large fake owls. I have one - but it doesn't deter mynahs and cockatoos - but I think has a great effect on mice, rats & possums. ... It sits on top of the chicken coop. I move it every now and then - hoping 'things-out-there' will notice it has moved and think maybe it is real .... ( I can dream on I guess ).

Quite a few old CD's ( from another BYC thread ) hung in strategic places around in trees etc., is also a possible deterrent to hawks. The flashing of them in a slight wind, gives the birds the jitters, and they take off. All birds apparently - according to the post.

Cheers ~ ~

The hamburgs were raised by my nephew he hatched and raised them. But they let my granddaughters and us pat them and pick them up. They aren't squatting they just stand still.
As I said I'm not sure if my chooks don't know they're chooks. Not all my girls like being picked up or patted.

ozbird I'm sure you'll enjoy this thread as much as the rest of us. Lots of good advice and shoulders to lean on here.

Anniebee I'll have to try the cd's for crows. Do the girls worry about cd's, or do I need to hang them fairly high? I haven't seen any hawks. Lucky chased off a Maggie the other day but the doves are allowed free run. We have a owl, its head moves in the wind, but nothing seems to care about it.

Thank you :) I still have my white faced black spanish girl left who was bought on the same day. Yes miss frizz did lead a long life. My pekin bantams tend to live to about 9/10 so i seem to have quite a bit of luck with them
