Anniebee your gals sure do know how to keep you on your toes!

That video is so cute!  Yep, I think Dusty would do that for a meal worm ;)

sweetbeak love the pic of your Silkies!

LuckysMum I hope your Araucana is OK now and that is was just the dust.

I have been AWOL for a couple of days; my knee has been giving me all kinds of grief.  Yesterday a walk from having it elevated on the bed to sitting outside to watch the girls while hubby went to get a hair cut had me in tears by the time I got to the front door.

Anyways, long story short .. pain had become pain, swelling and heat so had to call in a doctor.  He suspected septic joint and off to hospital I had to go .. I was fighting and kicking that one! Well, just fighting, no kicking ;)

All the way there I was telling hubby I was not staying!  Luckily septic joint was ruled out and I came home with a diagnosis of prepatellar bursitis [house-maid knee] and my new fashion accessory, a walking stick which I took great delight in waving at my son when I got home LOL :old

Still in all kinds of pain but at least now I know what it is and how to manage it.  X-Ray showed that my knee had "had a hard life / good workout".

I am really not having a good run at the moment

Any tips/experience managing joint pain .. fish oil? Glucosamine with sulphate? etc

My mum swears by krill oil for joint pain. She has carpel tunnel and they wanted to operate but she said I'll wait and ill see. Her doctor said krill oil and she swears its all better now . Said it took a few months but got there in the end.

Turmeric paste is excellent for all inflammatory needs, especially the joints, I have a warm almond milk and turmeric drink every night, good for a good night sleep too, I also give it to my dogs, can be put in cooking etc, I do suggest you get some better than fish oil, but I take that too.

Teila Sorry to hear about your knee. Sorry I can't give you any better advice than you've got. Good luck hopefully it will get better quickly.
My Araucana is still wheezing. I cleaned the coops out there is no dust now just the pine shavings. I'm hoping that will help.

Gerty will come when she's called. Lucky will if she thinks there's something in it for her and if I call the chooks Bear comes running every time, I think he thinks he's going to miss out on something. Haha
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend this mild temps for everyone.

Hi, my name is Corrie I am from Cedar Grove in QLD. We have a flock of 10 chooks and 2 Muscovy ducklings.

Welcome CorrieW I'm from Sydney and relatively new to BYC and to chickens. Lots of good advise and helpful hits for the asking. I have 2 chickens would love more but can't make up my mind what breeds to get and if they would all get along. I have a Australop and a leghorn..they are best mates.

They may be for other snakes but millia is in the lounge room. Never had one even close to the house. They are after a feed and a drink unfortunately. Breeding season is normally around December with babies being born in February. The smaller ones hubby has relocated my guess would be they are about 18 months old and the bigger one i was thinking about 3 . Snakes do have a wicked sense of smell as they have bad eyesight and are basically deaf. They use vibrations and smell to find food and water. They normally know whether they can eat something or not..So it was odd when it came to bidda that it killed her but couldn't eat her. MIlla is super hungry at the moment and will eat sometimes 3 times in one week for weeks at an end , She can go for stints of up to 8 months without eating though too. Just after a shed like she did this week she will eat and eat and eat,

Thanks so much for your reply and the information about snakes - and particularly your Milli. Really loved the 3 photos' you have shown here - she is a big beautiful girl.

Would have loved to have a carpet snake as a pet - but with the assortment of pets we've had over the years - mostly indoors ( > 6 cats ) dogs, budgies ( partly indoors ) and now chickens, I have never dared think beyond the wishing bit. Am almost certain a young carpet snake would not have lived long with dem cats !!

They are fascinating creatures, and are protected - however, if I found a tiger or brown in our back garden one of two things would happen. The first - lock up the chickens ( 99% doubt that any snake could get into them ) keep Miss Ruby inside, call the snake catcher. Second ? - ( you don't want to know ). Living as we do, between two creeks - although they are 5 minutes walk each way - I am wary on hot days. Always severely rattle the wood pile before letting the girls out.

Cheers ....

Any tips/experience managing joint pain .. fish oil? Glucosamine with sulphate? etc

Lots of great advice given here from Tillicans and satay .... Glucosomine with chondroitin will work - but would take days > couple of weeks to realise the reduction in pain - at the proper dosage.

For inflammation, Manuka honey - brilliant. Eat a spoonful AND spread a little of this very thick sticky honey onto the knee area - which then needs to be covered with kleenex' and a light bandage to hold it all on. If that honey gets on anything - it then gets on to everything. It is different to the normal honey. The expensive stuff ( $49 a bottle ) from New Zealand and $26 a bottle from Tasmania, I don't use. Capilano have recently raised groves of leptospermum ( manuka ) for specific hives, and that is cheaper, but still does the job. Manuka has a coded grading - from 5+ to 15+. The higher the grading the better quality it is, and presumably more cost. ? Hubby removed the entire wrapped id and info when he opened the jar himself. Will have a look at what grade I've got, next time I am in the store it was purchased from.

I swear it fixed my inflammed arthritic toe after the gout. Took about 3 days for all inflammation to disappear from that area. After all, we happily rub in deep heat ointments etc., and anything that goes onto the skin, is absorbed by the skin. Well, that's what I believe, and while it is possible that it was purely coincidental and the inflammation might have gone anyway, it was way too evident at the time for me to ignore it. That inflammation has not returned, and I can walk normally again. Have arthritis several places elsewhere, but put up with it. Only bothers me here and there - changes in weather cause it to flair up.

Subsequently tho, more inflammation in thumb joint - same Manuka application - pain gone, however that one has returned to a degree. If it gets really bad the Manuka jar will come out again. Meantime I take one Glucosomine / Chondroitin tablet per day, until I see my doctor when she returns, and get her ok to take that up to 2 or 3 a day. That is a recent thing, as I waited for the two ingredients to appear together. I am not sure about the Glucosomine sulphate, by itself.

Good luck - and I so hope that pain you have, does a very quick disappearing act.

Cheers ........

Thor and our cat ty are often in when milla is out. They pay her no attention. I'd happily leave any snake be as long as it isn't hurting anything. We had a beautiful red belly around last year. Haven't seen her this year.
