Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

One of our girls is still moulting and looks terrible.. poor Princess. Lucy (who was picked on severely when we first got her) has finished moulting and looks lovely. She has settled in now and is also laying 80g eggs at the moment! On the subject on of calcium carbonate.. I was reading somewhere the other day that someone crushed up an antacid tablet and fed bits to her girl as a way of getting calcium carbonate. I can't remember where I read it now.. it was on a blog by someone in the states. I wonder if a quikeze would have the same effect

We got four new additions last weekend... 3 pekin frizzle bantams (6wks old and super cuddly) and one speckled sussex rooster (6mths old). Being naive I didn't even think about the challenge of introducing another rooster.. we have a 9mth old bantam rooster. Lets just say there have been a few scraps but they now seem to have taken a "you keep your distance and I will keep mine" approach for the time being.

This is Felix.. pretty certain he is a roo going by the comb and wattle development and cocky stance ;)

This is Margot.. we think she is a she her comb and wattle haven't gotten any bigger or redder.

This is Pepper.. she is the smallest and definitely a pullet I would say

and this is Mr Speckles. Still a little unsure of his place yet.

Awwww.. they are gorgeous!

Not happy Jan today. Got up this morning and I am guessing the fox got into my turkey pen and killed one of my pet male turkeys little g and one of my pekins.. It dug so deep into the ground that it dug under wire and the corro.. Looks like i need to find something else again to deter them. Have electric fence up. Wire dug into the gound as well as corro and an 8ft fence.. Moving big g and the others from that pen to the main chicken coop tonight until i can figure something out. R.I.P little G you were one of our breeders at first but mostly my pet for 8 years.

Sorry to those of you who have lost one of your girls :(
Satay.. how heartbreaking... those bloody foxes. I have only ever seen two large ones and the dogs chased them off. We have a lot of open area around us and I am always paranoid that one might get in before we lock them in at night.

Satay I am so sorry to hear of Little G fate... those damn foxes... I'm terrified that they will get my girls....and you sound like you were well protected...that's scary!!!

Hello everyone , i have just joined the rank of being a chook owner , i have two Isa Browns , decided to go with these girls being a beginner . I live in suburbia and we have built a nice , comfy , safe coop and pen for them , i can watch them from my living room . I purchased a Omlet Go Up coop for them and built a pen around it , to make sure it was pest proof , only problem is so far they don't want to sleep in the coop they want to perch on top of it . I am picking them up and putting them in the coop every night , we have had them for about a week , i'm hoping they get the idea soon . Cheers everyone !!

Thanks all. Big g is in the main pen and not very happy about it but safe now. I have left that pen empty for now. Fingers crossed that will be the last loss for a while. I inherited about 8 leghorns and the same of back aussies on the weekend when my neighbours moved. Now if some of the freeloaders around here start laying we will all be good. :lau

Some times it takes them a while to get the hang of going to bed. Fingers crossed they figure it out for you soon.
:welcome
