Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

K Riggs as duck eggs are bigger than chook eggs I'll have to see how to pack them. I have seen that some people pack them in a tube with a lot of padding in between. I will ask lots of questions when I get them. Let me know how many you want and how you want me to transport. Some say don't do air but then it will be a long trip.
Fancy do you have any preferences when you send eggs. I have read some say 2 chicks from 12 eggs is acceptable, is that normal.
On one site they said don't write fragile or fertile eggs as they will smash it around on purpose. I've had no experience with posting eggs so any info would be greatly appreciated by both of us haha.

I send on a Monday in the hope that the eggs won't sit around in an Australia post Van over the weekend. I wrap each egg individually in paper towel to reduce movement in the carton, then I double bubble wrap the carton place in a shoe box with more padding and then place inside a post bag. I've sent eggs all round Australia with few breakages and no , never write fragile on the bag. It's like a red rag to a bull.

One of my hens got through a hole in the fence while i was working on the coop and was on the nature strip. Some young hoons hit her with their car, i didn't see it but it's possible it was on purpose. The marks on the road looked liked they swerved to get her. The turned around and got out to look laughing. By the time i realised what was happening it was too late ant they were gone. She was lovely and hadn't being laying long and layed blue eggs. Feeling very down about it.

:hit
Oh god how disgusting... they should be reported to the police... hoons not quite right in the head.... oh I am so angry!

Susan I'm so sorry to hear you lost the battle with Molly. I lost my Midnight during the night too. I tried everything but last night should wouldn't even take water from a dropper. She went fairly quickly from fine to wobbly overnight but still eating and drinking to that afternoon not wanting anything then this morning I went out and she'd gone some time last night. I'm getting some more eggs and 4 x 20wk old Sussex on the weekend. Then I'll be trying to hatch some Cayuga's.

K.Riggs I was very sad when I read your post. Those boys made me angry they don't care or think about the hurt they cause other people. Did anyone else see the car maybe you could find out who did it.

Fancy if you're getting enough eggs from your silkies would you consider sending some to Perth. Thanks
Thanks Lucky. Sorry you lost Midnight... it's devasting!
How wonderful 4 new gals... I love Sussex... hmmmm I really love all chookens! I am really hooked. I finally convinced hubby to get 2 new hens...but sadly I will have to wait just in case Molly had something! Watching my other gals very carefully...although they are all doing well (checked their crops this morning) and are all laying! Molly I don't believe ever laid an egg... she was the lowest in the pecking order and was smaller than the other two bantams.

I would report it but i didn't see the make of car just a silver 4wd and as i was walking up i knew they were on the road laughing but i didn't realise what at until they had driven off. Only when i got up my long driveway did i see her. So i hadn't observed them closely :'( I do know they sped up not slowed down when they saw her.
I am still really upset about it, it was a very messy clean up so more dusturbing than most losses. I am glad she didn't suffer but my roo is still pretty hysterical crowing all day non stop.

The only thing that has cheered me up is Luckysmum is doing me the amazing favour of sending me some Cayuga duck eggs to incubate. I have been chasing this breed which is impossible to find here so i am really excited about that. Also i am getting 4 more bantam hens from a farm nearby that has too many on Friday so i have a lot to be positive about. I had 5 blue egg layers from chicks, lost one to a hawk two months ago and then this one yesterday :( i only have three left and don't want anything to happen to them!!

Excellent...good luck with your new ducks and batams... I am envious!

7 pages of catch ups. :barnie

So very sorry to hear of the loss of Molly, Susan Hampshire ... and the same for your Midnight LuckysMum .. and K.Riggs ... having those hoon mongrels kill your chicken for laughs, is utterly disgusting -- and very disturbing.

RIP to all those lovely feathered friends.

Welcome to newcomers. ( can only see K.Riggs, AndyPandy and think SandeeC ) .... AndyPandy ... I am a 1.5 minute drive from the IGA supermarket in Upwey ... are you anywhere near there ? ... it's a lovely area, not so good in the summer though.

Mandy and her scaly mite !! ... her legs are more black looking now, and she has again resorted to staying in her bed ... will come out to sit near the layer pellets ( food source close at hand !! ) .... so I pick her up and put her somewhere from where she has to walk - which she does quite happily - but usually straight back to the confines of her coop. Also open the gate and she likes to walk / waddle out to eat grass, but not for long. She seems happy and healthy and has a huge crop of food at the end of every day.

Have begun the Vicks treatment, but think I might have to resort to Vet. intervention ... for a chemical wash. The darned mites seem to have packed themselves so tightly under the scales, yet the scales are not lifting at all ??? ... I am tempted to lift one scale at least, but have been advised here, not to do that, so haven't. She is always better after the vaseline treatment, and likes her feet & legs being rubbed / massaged. I gently stretch her legs, and that seems to help also. Any animal / bird / person - not using their muscles properly, don't move well, ultimately. So it is with her. But - she is overall much better than she was say, 6 months ago. I think she has developed a 'habit' of sitting near the food and water ... but she sure makes her way back into bed at night with Molly - they shuffle about for best and most comfortable positions. Any other suggestions ( apart from the Vicks - which I have now begun and will do once a week for another 3 weeks ).

Loved the photo you posted of a snow capped Mt. Wellington Fancy ... what a spectacular view you have.

No other news from Upwey, except that it has been and continues to be, exceedingly cold (read 'freezing' ).

Cheers all ....

Scaly leg mite i mix pesdene powder with vasoline and coat legs every second night for three times, then repeat two weeks later plus clean coop and add pesdene to dust bath spots, roosts and nest boxes. Works a treat.
