Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

K Riggs that great fingers crossed for no more quitters. I'm going to have to do some research soon. I have no idea on how to care for ducks. I've had chickens for the most of the last 25 years and we had chooks when I was growing up. But no one around has had ducks.

Hahahaha Same! So far all I really know is soupy duck crumbles, water, brood lamp and niacin. My new ducks seem very happy in their new home so hopefully I'll do it right  I got a copy of Story's guide to raising ducks so I better start reading it!

I'll have to get something too. It gets confusing reading all the different things people write. My husband was looking on you tube for some ideas on ponds and housing, some of it was downright stupid. I'm sure I'll get there before they hatch. :lau

I'm sure some people spend literally $1000's. I wont be. I made a large pen near my fruit trees against my house for my new ducks. It has one brick side, one wooden fence side and two chicken wire sides. It is woodchip on the ground on half and grass on half, they have steps from a wood pallet up to a kiddie pool and a dog kennel full of staw. I let them out under the fruit trees on 1/3 of an acre during the day and put them to bed at dusk. I feed them soupy duck pellets, soaked wheat, cos lettuce, oats and banana.

They are getting along with the geese well too which is good considering the goose is broody and the gander in protection mode.

My ducklings will go into a brooder tote in the laundry then move to an enclosed pen in the barn with a heat lamp and then in with my current ducks.

Or maybe I will do what lots of people do and have them live in my lounge room in a kids playpen wearing nappies forever... OR NOT!!!! :lau

The playpen sound like fun my grandkids would love that. They don't want to leave as it is. NOT!!!! I generally keep my chicks in the laundry for 1 week then in the patio for a few weeks depending on the weather. After that they go into a coop that I can roll around the lawn till they a big enough to go into a big coop and run. As we have a problems with cats now I will have to net the tree they are going under and make sure nothing can get to them.

Do's any body know any thing about these no crow collars ? Do they work or is to cruel.?

All I know is the conversation I saw on here turned reeeeaaallly nasty real quick. Someone told the person who was thinking of using one that it was the same as mutilating the hands of a violinist :hmm It's a really "trigger" conversation it seems. I'm steering clear  lol

Yes I think I might do the same.Ill stick with buying fertile eegs

It's a fairly emotive topic. Buying fertile eggs will still result in some cockerels being hatched so I'm not sure what you mean.

I think he means buying fertile eggs and getting rid of the roos instead of keeping roos for fertile eggs and trying to control crowing.
