Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

They are types of japenese quails.

Yep, just different colours, they come in so many they each get a name

That said, each colour has slightly (very slight) different characteristics. Oh, and you shouldn't have more than one golden (if it's male) because apparently if you incubate the eggs for a golden hen and roo (I read this, so I'm only going off that) you will loose 25% of the living chicks before they hatch because of their genes mixing in a bad way. I'm not sure how, but it sounded legit

Let us know how it goes!

So the easiest way to go would just go for all Japanese Quails of the same color!
I plan on selling the fertile eggs and Pure Bred is going to get more.

Thanks Satay

Not exactly chook related, but here is my latest project- A 4 m by 2.5 M greenhouse, foundations laid with the assistance of my 2 very capable helpers.
Love the photo Ash. Koolies are a great Aussie breed
Koolie, never heard of that breed. I have a Kelpie x Collie.
just like heeler and kelpies. We had a mad kelpie once she ran as fast as she could all day we had her trained but then had to sell her to a big ranch out in the NT too much energy in that worker for a small herd

Sorry for the incoming barrage of photos but I finally finished my coop :-D well, except for roosts and nest boxes :)
It's not the prettiest thing but no foxes are getting in that's for sure!
I bolted the pallets together, raised one side so the roof would slant, filled the pallets with cardboard and Styrofoam then covered with sheets of mdf. There happened to be a concrete slab right where the coop was going but I still layered up the floor a bit. Put bricks around the edge to lift the pallets a little, then used foam gap filler in the cracks, filled in floor with gravel to keep the bedding off the ground incase some moisture made it through, then a layer of straw and a layer of wood chips :) oh and strewn with crushed wormwood :) big windows in the door and side with very secure wire but also don't go straight through so air can get in and out easily but any animal that isn't meant to be there is gonna have a bad time :p
Photos :)

Sorry to hijack but my sister just sent this to me - I didn't know if anyone was down in Victoria? If the girls were up here I would have a couple like a shot...my grand plan is for a Chicken Rescue one day, but in the meantime this place is doing a fabulous job - its urgent to get the girls new homes...

URGENT PLEA FOR LOVING & SAFE HOMES FOR RESCUED BATTERY HENS
Without your urgent help we cannot save them all and they will be sent to slaughter next week. Edgar’s Mission has been contacted yet again by a battery hen farmer who has had a change of heart and wants to exit the industry. Most importantly, he wants to spare his hens the fate of being slaughtered. But we have a problem, we need to collect and rehome the hens this coming weekend (Saturday the 11th and Sunday 12th of May) as we simply do not have the room to accommodate an extra 800 chickens here at the sanctuary. Here’s how you can help:
  1. Open your heart and home to one or more rescued battery hens
  2. Donate to our medical fighting fund to ensure we can provide veterinary care to those hens who require it.
  3. Volunteer at the sanctuary this Saturday, Sunday or Monday (you will need to be at the farm by 9.30am).

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ -Those wishing to adopt a hen will need to complete our Prospective Adoption Form. When picking up your new feathered family members, you will need to bring suitable carry cages or boxes that can comfortably accommodate the number of hens you wish to adopt. Hens must be collected from Edgar’s Mission, 365 McHargs Road, Willowmavin, Victoria, this Saturday 11th May from noon or Sunday 12th May from 9.30am. Special arrangements can be made for Monday collection but it is imperative the hens are rehomed ASAP. This is an enormous undertaking to move such a large number of hens in such a short space of time but we truly believe we can pull this off. Please don’t let us or the hens down and please share far and wide.
