Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

G'day - I am from West Gippsland, near Warragul. I am new to this site, but have been breeding poultry for more than 40 years.
In the past I have kept Orpingtons, Indian Game, Silkies, Hamburgs, RIR, peacocks, guinea fowl, and various ducks.
Currently I have Isa Browns for eggs, and Araucanas. I am currently working on two projects - "deconstructing" the Isa Browns into
a fair simulation of RIRs and Rhode Island Whites., and trying to develop a large egg laying non- broody type Araucana cross
- that lays blue/green eggs of course. I have 35 chooks in total, but need to build more coops!
Also run Boer goats.

Cheers

Michael

Hi Michael, Sounds like you are busy with your hens there. I have Araucanas too. Your projects sound great. I love my Araucanas but would be much better if they weren"t broody all the time and you could get a bigger green egg layer. :welcome

Michael, Nice to have another fellow Victorian aboard. Some interesting breeding projects by the sounds of it. Just the mention of ducks has me wondering... What breeds did you have?? For the last few years I have concentrated on Runners- but I have had pretty much everything else other than the bantam breeds at some point in time.

G'day Michael :welcome

Sounds like some interesting projects you've got going there. I'd love to see some pics of your birds. :D

Do you have many goats? I have a handful of Boer and Boer x goats and want to add some dairy goats. Seems to be a lot of dairy goats advertised down your way but it's a bit far for me to drive!

I used to breed pekins and khaki campbells- all I have left now are 2 elderly KCs.

Have 26 boer and boer vcross at the moment- must get organised and put an add on trading post and sell a few
young bucks and does!

Welcome Michael.. always good to have another Victorian on the forum

It hasn't been too bad here weather wise.... The animals are all drinking plenty of water and it has been nice and warm... but no torrential rain like QLD and not stinking hot like it is in Northern Vic. I'd love a little bit of rain though.... the house yard is starting to dry out & some of the paddocks could do with a drink! Hopefully we get the rain that is forecast for Sunday

RareBreedFancier - there are a few dairy goats advertised around here too! and just over the border in Mt Gambier! I wouldn't mind a dairy goat.. Goat's cheese is just divine! I have this uncanny ability to accumulate animals though. I think I need to slow down / stop before I am overrun! (I'm going to look at a miniature pony tomorrow... I have no need for one at all... but why not?)

duckyfromoz - hope you had some luck with your gold detector. My hubby and I think it would be awesome to have one!

Hope everyone enjoyed their Australia day and has either had a long weekend, or is looking to enjoy the weekend ahead!

Oh yes! I've seen the adds in Mt Gambier too! I do love goat's cheese, I'm wanting to get to dairy goats since I've worked out I'm intolerant to cows milk and goat milk and cheese is so terribly expensive. I only have 7 goats at the moment and only 2 breeding age does. A dairy doe would be so much easier to milk than my Boer mixes.

I have 7 pieces of old rusting junk !! Which means I had a GREAT day. Enough hole digging to make things interesting, I had 2 hours of peace.... Finding gold isnt the only reason I take the detector out. With the head phones on- you cant think - it completely relaxes me and I can almost zone out at times listening for faint sound. It was pretty hot on Thursday up there- so I was only out for 2 hours starting at midday. Cant wait to do it again...but winter is the best time for it- not so hot and easier to dig. The ground is rock hard at the moment.

G'Day Michael and welcome to our thread. I think you Victorians are going to outnumber us Queeslanders soon....

Oh well I can't say much, I was born in Victoria. I've just started and have my first ever chicken (silkie) who is settling in well. You seem like you have your hands full and I'm sure you would come with a wealth of knowledge. Do you have any live stock as well i.e. cows for milking or steak? Unfortunately our place is too small to even have a goat. Never mind, I will start with the chickens first, then down the track .........

Anyway just thought I'd say Hi and

:welcome to Michael.
I think Victorians pretty much rule the roost round here. They're all I see, besides a few Queenslanders. :lau SA hasn't got a chance of catching up to you. Am I the only one here?!

I spent Australia day in the middle of the wilderness, driving down a dirt road. I would've liked to see the fireworks, but the holiday wasn't a bad experience either.

Despite the fact most of the places we were going weren't even on the GPS. :p
