My quails sure are going through the whole pallet of egg colours. The really dark one from this morning is darker than any marans egg I have ever seen.

Wow satay, those are beautiful eggs. :D

First wellie just popped out as I came in to the room this morning. I really have been hatching quails far too long this year because as it came out I though omg it huge.. Then I realised it is not just I am used to little tiny quails now lol. Will get picks later when it dries out.

In keeping with the chickens-cause-drama themes of late: I got home today and my bantam sussex has had her head pecked bloody, most likely the culprit is the (decidedly non bantam) barred rock, who does peck at her on a regular basis, though never very seriously before. Normally the sussex will squeak, sidestep and carry on. They have an odd relationship as they are close friends and the sussex presents to the barred rock as though the BR were a roo. The BR presents to us and doesn't seem to be a roo, though she is huge and butch and awkward and is yet to lay eggs.

Not sure why today she has pecked poor Sybil bloody.

The girls range in the garden all day so it is not about being cramped or stressed, and they have been together for the last 7 months without any issues. Though it is pure speculation I found several drops of blood in the nesting area and it may have occurred during laying, perhaps Sybil was laying and couldn't move away? Or POSSIBLY the BR finally laid an egg as we have two HUGE eggs that aren't readily identifiable to either of the usual girls, so maybe there was some laying stress and things got a bit aggro. I don't know.

So now, Sybil is no longer bleeding, has scabbed over, and is bright eyes and bushy tailed and happily hanging out with the BR again. Doesn't seem nervous at all. There is only the usual pecking going on, nothing especially aggressive.

Is it worth washing her head off and putting on some ointment ? Do you think I need to separate them? And can we buy "blu kote" in Australia?

Sorry Mog I must have missed your post some how. I would just leave it if the injury is not to bad. I find sometimes it stresses them more trying to catch them. If it looks really bad I would catch it and wash the injury with just warm water and salt. Then keep it separate for a few days til it starts to heal. Keep us updated on how it goes.

We can buy blue kote i think it has a different name here but I may be wrong. Ash may know he is the man of experience in this thread :)
