Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

My favs have started doing the egg song!!!

Looks like those first eggs are getting closer!!
Actually had one yesterday that was slightly larger than our bantams with a bit if a point squished as laid looking top on it. Guess that could even have been one. Two of them are sitting on the roost and clucking while one of the banties is on the nest. So just added an extra nesting box just in case they aren't brave enough to go in with her on it :) (its big enough for 2 at a time)

Yah lets hope you have lots of egg soon. What colour eggs so favs lay?

thanks Chook and Pinky.

So, Chook, how many crosses to get the eggs olive? that particular egg, and couple more dark eggs are actually by an araucana rooster, so how dark might that first cross be (if they are a hen and if they have a pea comb)
I'll try to find a pic of first generation Marans with ara roo but most of my photos are on one of my many external hard drives so it wouldn't be for a while, probably quite similar to the olive eggs on my profile pic. Those dark olive eggs I have been working on for 4 years and are the result of 5 different crosses. I have one of those dark green eggs wriggling around in the incubator with Marans over it again so fingers crossed for a pullet! On that note I had a little chick hatch day 18 from my croad egg, It has wheaten feathering though so will end up as a layer but the other croad egg has pipped and is peeping too!

Where did everyone get their candlers from? I would like to get a new one so though I would ask first to see what is best before buying.
I use a titan egg candler, it is on mains power so you always have a bright light and never need new batteries. Only down fall if you needed to candle in a black out you would have to fall back on another one. It is really good for candling in the light and with my dark eggs I need a really powerful one to see what is going on... I do incubation programs at my kids kinder and school each year so it's good for demonstrations in the day light too...

Any ideas where to get one? I want one to be able to see the darker eggs like you said.

Woo hoo!! Hopefully my little Fav, Fry, isn't that far behind. How exciting.

At risk of repeating what everyone one else has already said - great coloured eggs Rex and Chook! I can't wait til my Araucana and Wellies start to lay and get a nice range of colours.

Well what a somewhat eventful morning at my place - I had my horse vaccinated for Hendra. Long story short, my poor mare had to take the huge microchip needle in her neck 3 times. 1st time she pulled back and went a bit crazy so the needle fell out. He put it back in again and plunged the microchip in ...... or so we thought.
He grabbed the scanner to check ...... nothing!! The d@mn chip had fallen out when she pulled back the first time.
So vet had to go back to the clinic to get another chip. Meanwhile I was leading Lou around the yard letting her eat the grass. She stepped on her lead rope, panicked and pulled back and smacked me right in the left side of my face, dropped me on my butt. I think I may have blacked out for a split second, but I can't be sure.

Vet returns, has to put a local anesthetic in her neck to numb the site to put the microchip needle in the 3rd time. She carries on a bit, but we get it done. Phew! Took the vaccination for the Hendra easily, just the big chip needle was the worry.

So that was my morning, now I am sitting at my desk at work with a pounding headache and hoping I won't get a black eye.

Oh, and welcome Kingsley
