IamSamSam and City lay-Dee I am sure that someone will answer your query re the Canberra show. I know that it is going to be pretty big,and that all sorts of people are going, so if you can get there it would be worthwhile!

I am editing this because I have made a decision today! I was on the verge of buying some Bantam Malays, but I decided that for Bantam Malays the price was WAY too cheap($20 each),these birds are rare as,well, hens teeth

so at that price there had to be something wrong. As a few of the Malays that I bred this year turned out smallish I thought"Why not create your own line of them?" So that is a new project, along with the ducks of course! Honestly think that breeding your own is the way to go,don't know about anyone else, but I seem to get sold an awful lot of duds! They look good at the time, but down the track the faults come out. Also WISH the Standards book would get here-I realise that they have had their problems, but I sent them a cheque for the book on December 5 last year which is when they were taking orders for it, now it looks like it won't be out until June

Hello Everyone

I'm sooooo excited, just picked up my 4 Australorp girls. They are in a crate waiting for sun down so I can introduce them to Shatzy my silkie. They are at point of lay and it will be approx. another 4 weeks till they start laying - it will be my first ever egg. Chicken coop nice and clean just left enough of the old stuff so that Shatzy's scent permeates the coop.

I wish everyone a HAPPY AND SAFE EASTER SEASON

I am very happy to say that none of my Australorps attacked Shatzy my Silkie. They all seem to be living in harmony. I'll let them out in the afternoon and see what happens. That was a worry and a half however Shatzy has obviously stood her ground.

Ashburnham, just out of curiosity, what breed is the chick furthest to the left? I couple of my cross-bred chicks are feathering out with colours like that.

Okay, now, everyone: meet The Bard. He's a sixteen-week-old light barred Plymouth Rock.

He's nothing anywhere near resembling show quality, I know. But he is suitable for my (stud) purposes. My father wants a rooster to put with his layers from time to time (to be honest, I don't think any of my bantam roosters are up to the job, his layers are all big ISA Browns or Leghorns), and I have a fetish for barring. Then I found out that this guy was being sold by someone nearby. They said they didn't know the gender, but they reckoned it was a boy -- I think so, too. His combe and those bits underneath his chin (I do know the name for them... I'm sure I do!) are almost bigger than a lot of the laying-age chooks we have, and given that if he were a girl, he wouldn't be laying for a few more weeks, I'm inclined to think he's a boy.

He's also gigantic! Well, that's what I get for dealing mostly with bantam-sized chooks, I guess. My father has some full-sized chooks but I don't handle them much so I'm used to bantams. He's huge! And his feet are massive even my comparison to his size. I hope chickens aren't like dog, where the feet shows how big they'll get, because I'm not sure it's possible for him to get much bigger!

And yes, his name is a play on words. It's sort of a joke between me and my mother, who couldn't work out why a black-and-white-striped chicken would be called 'bard'. Because she was imagining it spelt wrongly, and didn't understand until I said, "Because it looks like bars", which was when she told me the mistake.

Well, Bard was home for about fifteen minutes before he found his way out of the pen he was in. He hasn't been back since. I gave up on it and just let him free-range during the day and lock him up with the others at night. He doesn't go far from the others anyway. He's quite friendly (I think he was hand-raised) and rediculously easy to catch (maybe his size?). So far he seems quite gentle, too.

So, happy Easter everyone!
from Rachel.
