Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

IamSamSam thanks for putting up those photos- I know its a very long shot- but in the second group you have two ducks and a turkey- I was wondering if you knew what breed the second duck was entered as? It looks very much like one of my juvenile birds not yet fully molted. I might ser if I can get some info on what was entered to work it out- but just on the off chance... do you remember??

Cold, wet, and grey here, too.

I'm not complaining - I like this weather (yes, I'm crazy).

The only thing is my chooks are stupid - standing out in the rain. Let me tell you, Frizzles do not look like Frizzles anymore when wet. And the Silkies... well... more like echidnas? The others... well, just look like wet chickens.

I candled the eggs again last night (day 15) and removed a dozen more. There are still lots which are borderline though. I'm only expecting about 5 or 6 to hatch definately of 48 which isn't very good but it was a test run for a new incubator and I wasn't sure of the fertility rate of the eggs anyway. My mother is getting very excited as the date approaches.

I'm really stressing at the moment because I have somewhere in the vacinity of nine assessments/exams in the next two weeks. 3 in German, 2 in Spanish, 2 in French, 1 in English, 1 piano exam. Argh! Who decided to put them all at the same time? While some are minor, don't count for much and won't take long, at least four are VERY major. I've got an 'investigative' task in each language which counts for something like 40% of the final grade for the semester - and it involves standing in front of the class and talking about something IN THAT LANGUAGE for 3-5 minutes, plus 3 minutes of question-answer time after. The piano exam is 6th grade AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) - music grades only go to 8th grade which is basically a qualification to teach piano! just to give an idea of what I'm doing. I've got most of the pieces all right but the scales are freaking me out - I'm so terrible at them and I'm going to get a rubbish mark.

Okay, so now I've spent far to long compaining, how about a funny story from one of my chickens? It's about Nemo. Maybe you've heard about Nemo a bit here https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655920/but-it-smells-like-a-chicken. Well, she's a 3-week-old Welsummer chick with a bad wing (I must take photos to compare - it's healing well). The other two chicks in the brooder at the moment are 4.5 weeks old and almost twice her size. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, doesn't it? Especially with the dud wing. I was worried and watching closely. Well, it seems that, assuming chicks even have a pecking order at this age, Nemo is at the top of it. She bosses the bigger chicks around so much! It's sort of cute to watch her standing up to them and pushing them around.

from Rachel.

Hi Ducky,

Here are some Pictures, the first is Miss Daisy, and the second Pink.As you can see Pink has come a long way,but I think she is going to be cinnamon?? I have sent you another picture to FB.Sorry about the delay, but the weather has not been the best for taking photos!

Hi Rachel.Good luck with your hatch! And your assignments! It's funny but sometimes the small chicks are the bossy ones,in the animal world it's attitude not size!

The girls are looking wonderful wooklet. I love seeing updates of my duckies. oh..and you will have to let me know when you start getting eggs!!

Good luck with your assignments Rachel and your hatch as well. Wooklet your ducks are beautiful :) Seems we have found winter early this year. It is darn freezing with near 0 temps at night already. brrrrr. I am not a fan of winter at the best of times so it really does not need to arrive early. On the plus side though it is still lovely and warm during the day.... well at least til about 4pm lol. One bonus is the grass may finally slow down it's growing now it is getting cooler so that will mean way less hours on the ride on.

On a lighter note to my last depressing self-centred post, I put 13 eggs in lockdown yesterday evening. They should hatch Wednesday morning, so I'm very excited!
