Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi Attila,

Love the name. You should be fine to leave them with the mum. I would keep an eye on them just to make sure the other hens aren't giving them a hard time but the mum should look after them ok.
Welcome to the aussie thread.

One of my quails is laying double yolkers :)

gday aussies
i just joined i have 3 isa browns and 1 Australorp chicken
1 of my isa's (Pecka) became very broodie the other week and so i sourced some fertalized eggs for her to sit on...they are due to hatch this weekend...
what do i do if we are successful with 2 new babies just leave Pecka to take care of them as she naturally would or do i need to seperate them and have the chicks under lights?

Great to have you on board Attila. I just had a broody hatch out some chicks about 3 weeks ago. I left my broody with the chicks in the nest box that had an extension out form it so the mum could have a stretch and the chicks would die if they fell out of the nest(my nest boxes are up of the ground). After 1 week or so of the chicks hatching i set up a separate little day cage for them so they could scratch about in the grass without being harassed by my dog or the other hens. They had a more secure cage at night so nothing could get them, I'm now up to the stage as the chicks are 3 weeks old by letting mother and the chicks back into the main run with the bigger hens (DO NOT do this until the chicks are around 16-18 weeks old UNLESS the chicks have a mother).

No need for any heat system if the have a mother just a dry place to rest at night and in the day. Have a small water container with rocks in it so the chicks don't drown if they fall in it and then a larger one for the mother he big enough so the chicks cant get in or just let mum drink out of the smaller container with the chick(this personally is safer) or you can just get a proper chicks feeder and water container.

Have plenty of feed as by weight chicks eat more than full grown hens.
Also if you let them roam around in the garden or where ever watch out for butcher birds and magpies as they will take chicks under around 4 weeks or so.

Hope this all helps.
P.S I'm no expert

but in my hatches this is what Ive found out.

Nor did I Luke. I asked another quail person on byc and they said crack it open and see and sure enough it was a double yolker. I also got a fart egg yesterday,. Now that was funny. It was about the size of a half of my little finger nail. Forgot to take a picture of that one though.

Thats excellent. Mine has quail eggs in it right now. Now i have to ask Ash do you keep all your babies or do you sell some?
