I have only named a few of my ducks over the years. Bindi is in my avatar. She was my first muscovey girl but was killed by the neighbours dog a few years ago. I do have ebony a black muscovey but they are mostly just called the girls.

LOL my son loves his 5 little ducks bed time story called Little Quacks Bedtime and their names are Widdle, Waddle, Piddle, Puddle, and Little Quack.
They are great satay, so funny. Yeah Ebony has been suggested for black ducks. Sorry to hear about Bindi.

Love the story book names SamSam. I like Waddle, Puddle and Little Quack.

Hi all,

My name is Mog, I'm based in Melbourne and I just joined BYC today.

I am stuck at work in this terrible 40+ heat hoping my girls are going to survive till I get home (I have taken all manner of precautions, but it is hard to know I can't check on them for 12 hours at a time in heat like this - I've only had them for 5 weeks, they are still yong and I fret!).

How is everyone else's flock holding up in the current heatwave?

Hi Mog

and welcome to the Aussie thread, It depends how old your chicken's are if they are mature (hens, roosters) then they should be fine but if they are young pullets I would fret as well as long as they have plenty of cool water(not warm, they wont drink it) and shade they should be fine. I'm up near Coffs Harbour and it's not to hot but I know it's hot enough to reduce my egg numbers by a few, my hens are mature except 3 3 day old chicks but they have mums so they should be fine. Hope everything is fine with your girls when you return home, keep us posted.

Don't worry - all my chooks survived Black Saturday with temperatures of 47 degrees,
and flames within 10 metres of the chook houses.

Thank you cluckcluckluke :)

My girls are only about 10 weeks old, so I worry.

They do have shade, a mister at one end of the run and I put ice in ther water this morning, and a big block of ice and berries to melt off during the day, but frankly in this heat I doubt it will have stayed cool for that long. It has been so hot all day.

My best innnovation worked well yesterday when it got up to 38C - big frozen juice bottles buried in the dirt bath. Came home and all of them were nestled in the dirt, which was nice and cool - bottle stayed partly frozen even over a 12 hour day and kept the dirt extra cool. Hopefully they are doing the same today and keeping themselves a little cooler that way.

Just discovered "Frosty Bowlz" and have ordered one, so hopefully I will be able to guarantee cooler water for longer in the future.

I think f they make it through today I will be able to turn the stress down a bit as it doesn't often tip over 40 in Melbourne. Only another 20 min and I can make my way home and see for myself :D

10 week olds a bit young, I would worry but wowwie you have mad special precautions, they will be absolutely fine with what you've done and I thought my girls where special. On a hot day I think I'll try that frozen bottle in the dirt, great idea,

Share with us what breeds you have and how many etc and well share ours(I love to say what I have.lol).

Hi there and welcome to BYC I also love on Melbourne and the ducks were really sweltering today.

Luckily my daughter was home - with the hose and was able to cool them down throughout the day. At least ducks dont mind the water so much- I read of a few people loosing chooks over the last two days. At least we have a cooler weekend coming up.

Ducky your alive lol Just jokin. Glad to see you pop by. Has anyone heard from wooklet. I heard about terrible fires in Tassie last night on the news,. We often get into the 40's here and so far thankfully i have never lost one to heat. Wow Ash you have some tough ladies there. Welcome mog. Sam it's strange to see your own eggs in another bator lol. I hope it was my whites that hatched :)
