I have 78 chooks, 60 of which are under 4 months old.
Mostly Isa Brown X Araucana X everything else.
But have recently got some pure Barrred Rocks and Bantam White Leghorn.
And one elderly peacock.

In the past I have bred Indian Game, RIR, Wyandottes, Seabrights, Light Sussex, Hamburgs, large leghorns, Black Orpingtons,

Hi all, saying hi from the sunny south coast NSW.

So anybody else in the heatwave zone ? Expecting a top of 43deg Tues which my poor 5mth old chooks are not used to so a little concerned.
I set up a quick misting system with some automatic watering system pipe this afternoon so am hoping that works to cool things down in the run. Got frozen water in coke bottles ready to go on a water dish.
Fingers crossed that's enough and I don't end up with four chooks in my lounge with the air con :)

Ahhh you guys have much larger scale flocks than I do. You live out in the country I imagine?

I have told my husband that my new "when we win the lottery" dream scenario is to have a decent sized property and breed chickens (they are definitely habit forming); but while we are in the suburbs he is relatively safe. I have pretty much hit the threshold for the number of critters we can comfortably maintain with our current space and time constraints.

I have wanted chickens my whole life and now finally own a home large enough to accomodate a micro flock; they are getting quite seriously spoiled.

I have just 4 little bantams - 2 Wyandottes, 1 Light Sussex and 1 Plymouth Rock. I had planned to get some others but my birds all became sick within a week of coming home and obviously I didn't want to bring any more in while that was going on.

Having now nursed and cajoled them back to health I have decided that 4 is enough for now - they pack a lot of personality into a small package. As mine are quite definitely pets, rather than working animals (and in my house pets are family members) I hadn't quite appreciated what a massive increase it was to have 4 new 'people' move in in one go and I am well ready to hold off on increasing the flock for a while.

They pulled through the hot days fine, a bit of panting but not too bad. However the fact that it just did not cool down overnight was much harder on them and they became quite distressed; in the end I booted them out of the coop and made them sleep in their (very secure) run which seemed to help. In comparison todays 36C is no biggie, so I am much less worried about them.

So, What sort of size flocks and what breeds do all you other Aussies have? I expect to experience quite a bit of envy :)
When I get a bigger home than where I am now I hope to get a pool with a pump and have lots of DUCKS and get many chickens that will free range all day and I'll have to go hunting for eggs every day(this may never happen.lol). Good to hear your little ones are O.K.
I have 18 hens now (just sold 4) , my hens are WLH's, langshans, Araucana's (love the green eggs), bantam RIR's and WLH's, Wyndottes, sexlinks and now have 2 new Indian Runner DUCKS.

Here is the Biosecurity DAFF response to import Jersey Giants..........

Please note that existing facilities for the importation of fertile eggs are designed for large commercial consignments. Hatching eggs are generally imported into the subsidised government facility at Torrens Island near Adelaide. This facility is fully booked for the next 3 years, and tentatively booked out for the next 5 years. Fees for use of the station are currently over $44 000 over the quarantine period (at least 12 weeks at $525/day) and this does not include export, shipping, laboratory, sentinel chicken, feed or labour costs. This part is ridiculous. WOW you would need a lot of patience and money.

Thanks

Lee
LETS DO IT...joking, stuff that. That is absolute crazy. So we either go commercial to the point that we would some how earn all of our money back *or* we just create our own line. Which sounds so much more practical.

You have probably already told me this Satay, but wow you have a lot or chickens and DUCKS (very jealous). Why does every one like Muscovy's, no offence but they seem very ugly to me and you barley get any eggs from them so you don't get anything back.
Satay do you have Marans???
