Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi all, saying hi from the sunny south coast NSW.
So anybody else in the heatwave zone ? Expecting a top of 43deg Tues which my poor 5mth old chooks are not used to so a little concerned.
I set up a quick misting system with some automatic watering system pipe this afternoon so am hoping that works to cool things down in the run. Got frozen water in coke bottles ready to go on a water dish.
Fingers crossed that's enough and I don't end up with four chooks in my lounge with the air con :)
Yep today (Tuesday) is a real scorcher, not going to expect much if any eggs today.

I have 78 chooks, 60 of which are under 4 months old.
Mostly Isa Brown X Araucana X everything else.
But have recently got some pure Barrred Rocks and Bantam White Leghorn.
And one elderly peacock.

In the past I have bred Indian Game, RIR, Wyandottes, Seabrights, Light Sussex, Hamburgs, large leghorns, Black Orpingtons,
Pekin and Khaki Campbell ducks, pheasants, peafowl,Guinea fowl and geese.

M
Ashburnham do you reckon you could upload a pic of your BWLH's, I just want to see if they look like mine, also you wouldn't happen to know of any one down my way with Black Orps.

Google your local council website that's where I found the rules for ours here in NSW.
Could you give me the link for the NSW one as I would like to see how illegal my poultry is.lol.

That's the thing I think every council is different, not just every state. This is ours

GUIDELINES FOR THE KEEPING OF POULTRY AND FOWL ON RESIDENTIAL PREMISES
Fowls should not be kept within 4.5 metres of a dwelling, public hall, school or premises used for the manufacture, preparation, sale or storage of food. Council may decide that a greater distance is required in a particular case.

Poultry other than fowls (such as ducks, geese etc.) should not be kept within 30 metres of any building mentioned above.

Roosters being kept in residential areas is not recommended as they create noise problems and are not required for egg production.

Poultry houses should be paved with concrete or mineral asphalt underneath the roosts or perches.
This does not apply to poultry houses that are:
(a) further than 15.2 metres from any building mentioned
above; or
(b) situated on clean sand.
should be enclosed so as to prevent the escape of poultry.
These guidelines are binding only after Council has served a notice stating that they apply to the land.

POULTRY YARDS –
NOTE –
Regardless of these guidelines, chickens and poultry must not be a nuisance or a health risk and poultry yards must be kept clean and free of offensive odours.
Development consent may be required for the construction of poultry and fowl houses. Con- tact your area planner for further information.

I searched my council web page but cant find anything on Poultry or Livestock.

You have probably already told me this Satay, but wow you have a lot or chickens and DUCKS (very jealous). Why does every one like Muscovy's, no offence but they seem very ugly to me and you barley get any eggs from them so you don't get anything back.
Satay do you have Marans???

i love my muscovies cause to me they are the friendliest of the duck breed. My scovies lay an egg a day on average right up to the start of winter then nothing til spring. I sell my non fertile muscovey eggs for $5 a doz to the asian community for pickiling. No I don't have marans Luke.( i have a bcm rooster but no hens) I keep being tempted to get some but so far have resisted the tempation lol. For breeding i have araucana's, rir. Austalorps, Cochins, brahmas and frizzle bantam and the wellies when they are old enough.

Ahhh  you guys have much larger scale flocks than I do. You live out in the country I imagine?

I have told my husband that my new "when we win the lottery" dream scenario is to have a decent sized property and breed chickens (they are definitely habit forming); but while we are in the suburbs he is relatively safe. I have pretty much hit the threshold for the number of critters we can comfortably maintain with our current space and time constraints.

I do indeed. I live 8km out of Esk which is a town of about 1800 people( mostly acerage properties) i think we are about 1 and 1/4 hours drive from Brisbane cbd.

Un chicken related by exciting for me. My lesbian budgie has layed an egg lol. I have had a few budgies for a few years now. Pearly i have had the longest she has just turned 3. People would come look at the budgie avairy and ask how many babies i get a year. I'd say none. Pearly and speedy and Heidi the 3 girls (speedy and heidi are only young) Have never shown any interest in laying so I would joking tell people i think she is gay cause she never seemed interested in the handsome males i got for her. She would go in the nest boxes all the time but never lay anything. On Monday arvo as i was collecting quail eggs i checked her box and she has layed one very small but cute white egg. Whether she sits now is another thing but she layed an egg. Go Pearly :)

Well I had to laugh at mine, particulary the bit about no poultry within 4.5 metres of a school. I suspect that my kids school didnt bother to look at the rules as we have a chook pen in the middle of the school grounds!

Its also rather surprising that they dont specifiy how many you can keep.

ahahha, good on you. 4.5m is just a pointless distance away.
