Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Just put a mixed load of Barred Rock, Light Sussex, White Leghorn, and "surprise" eggs in the incubator.
All from my friend and former Uni lecturer Jim, who has an amazing poultry breeding set up at Ferndale near Mount Worth.

Sounds like an interesting bunch of eggs!!

Curious, are there any breeds in Aus does anyone know, that you can buy as sexed chicks?

Years ago we bought some australop and Ida brown like that from the local pet shop but they've since closed and I would love three more chicks but don't want to play the rooster lucky dip again. I'd also like something a little more interesting than the black or brown without having to buy grown hens because we want them as pets too.

Thoughts?

Just thought Id share my suburban backyard set up.

It all began life as a kids cubby house as you can probably tell :) We originally had guinea pigs directly below the cubby so when we had chickens years ago added the lean to at the front. Ive just finished cladding it and using parts of one of those chook pens (that are way too small it turns out) that you can buy off ebay as the nesting box. Years ago when we had it I had to go inside to collect eggs, not doing that in winter again which is why it took ten years to replace the old chooks!
(Im only half way through changing the colour of the cubby railing from green to blue)

Hubby helped me add the timber divider from the yard to the run bit because it was just a bit beyond my carpentry skills lol (okay so he built it and I passed him stuff)

. Im going to use the planter boxes for some of my longer lived vegetables such as onions and capsicum I think so that I can rotate the vege garden without those ending up in the way because they havent finished. Also toying with the idea of planting a large blueberry right at the end near the dividing fence. That or a blackberry I think. Just need to change the temporary wire on the frames for some I bought yesterday that is wide enough to cover the whole frame all the way to the top.

We made it fairly high so that if we ever decide we need to put a wire roof over it we will be able to still stand up in there afterwards.

You can see what is left of the ebay chook pen inside the lean to here(nest box pokes out the front), and the rustic roost I built after seeing Luke's :)

This morning I put some pavers down where you walk in (the current gap with no gate) and hopefully this weekend will see a proper gate there instead of the bit of wire that we are using at the moment.

Happy with how it is coming along!

Still to do is turn the old guinea pig run into the broodie pen so have to add some wind protection and a bit of a roost so they can sit next to the others at night and clean out all the weeds and the old floor from the cubby that had rotted and fallen through (just finished repairing that too) Poor hubby is starting to wonder if he will ever get a weekend sitting on the lounge instead LOL

Love both the coops well done to you both. Welsummers and Barred rocks can be sexed as day olds. it all comes down to the person you by them from though whether they will tell you the truth when you buy them.

Salmon Faverolles are a fairly exotic bird that their sex can be found out at a young age, as the males and females feather out very differently with different coloring.
There are quite few breeds which you can tell the sex of just from their feather coloring.
