Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes. Luke where did you get your anconas from? I started a flock in April this year hatching eggs bought from qld and wa with mixed success but I now have 9 anconas. It took a lot of Internet searching to find anconas and no one in our area has them. It's so exciting watching them, they are starting to get their spots.

Well, I still have one chook with a really messy bum (the other one has settled down and is back to normal) and I am now suspecting vent gleet could be a contributing factor as her stools look reasonably normal, only slightly loose - not enough i think to account for the mess down her bum. Her vent is still pink rather than red, but looks far wetter than the others. No horrendous smell so far, but better safe than sorry....

So I am continuing with the ACV in their water and yoghurt/garlic in their mash and adding in a vitamin supplement, and on the weekend she will get a bum wash (it is manky back there) and topical ointment. She hasn't started laying yet, though is very close, and i would love to get this cleared up before she starts.

The other two have now started sneezing but it is pretty mild at this point and they are all getting the supportive measures listed above, so hopefully it will clear up on its own. When I first brought them home they all came down with the sniffles and it never got too bad - runny noses and sneezing but no coughing or wheezing. Cleared it up after a couple of weeks. I wouldn't been worried but it is getting colder and wetter now, a bad time to be getting the sniffles.

I wonder if all this has come on as a result of the stress of losing their flock mate. 3 weeks ago they were all in tip top shape. Now I feel like I am running around putting out spot fires.

Gosh Mog you are having a hard time of it. Sounds like you are doing all you can. Only other thing you can try is antibiotics if they don't get any better. Stress could be a factor. My wellies seem to hardly be eating since I moved them down the back since the attack. They look healthy so am not worried just yet but it does tend the throw them for a bit I find.

NEWS FLASH FOR LUKE LOL

I have found some one selling maran eggs and am on a waiting list for eggs. She says about a month I should be able to get some so we will see. They are Wheaton marans and blue and black copper all from the one pen. I will post pics if I am able to get them. Got my fingers crossed.

I know what you mean mog. I seem to have gone from everything's hunky dory to spending all my time caring for them. When thing go pear shaped it all seems to go at once doesn't it. It's not one problem its lots.

Update on mine. Tuppence is still with us and sounds just like her old self. In fact was just standing contemplating moving her back from my bothroom to the pen when she honked :). Might give it another day.

I went and bought the dust you recommended satay and the new ones could have cared less sitting on my knee getting a dusting. The old ones in not sure will ever talk to me again lol

So.....possible cause lice - tick. Possible cause dust from wood shavings in small box coop gone - tick. Boost them with vitamins - tick. Cross fingers that's enough - tick :)

Luke, TJ,and satay, if y'all are on Facebook try the Eggs Eggs and more Eggs group. They're advertising heaps of different breeds at the moment, including ancona for, I think, sixty and marans for forty :O

Still no chicks yet :( only day 22 though. The period when you're trying to decide if 'helping' is a good idea is really rough :-\

Hi Tj, I live in NSW and got mine from a lady near me, but she gets her starting flocks in from QLD, maybe the same person. Who did you get them off? I may recognize the name she said.
Mine are POL but I don't think they will lay till next spring.
