Yes - how is Afro doing?

Love seeing the pics of the Kelpies - so cute. I myself have very un-chicken friendly Dalmatians who have killed 3 of my girls; admittedly one was my fault though.
They got the third this weekend, my Lavender Araucana (In my avatar) who decided the grass was greener on the other side of the run and flew over the fence.
Well, that was the end of her.

I've never had a tick on any of my animals, dogs and horse included, but I don't doubt I will get one some time.

Oh that's so sad, sorry to hear that. I have heard that it is really hard with dogs after they have killed once to train it out of them. Nya has been really good so far, touch wood... She is just one year old though and still VERY playful, she has a lot of training ahead of her but she is very intelligent, I just have to channel it in the right direction so she doesn't get bored and destructive. My last kelpie Trix who passed away last year used to let the chickens sit on her.. it was soooo cute!

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments about Afro! I love this section as everyone is so warm and nice!

I called this morning and they said she has improved, she is walking about a bit so I can call back later to see if she can come home today... I am not sure if she is eating yet as her crop area was paralysed from the tick...I am guessing it must have fallen off the olive tree as I had one do that to me one day in Mosman (no grass to be seen then either Luke!) I clean their bed, aviary and run area with the tick solution regularly so, presuming that works, it has to have come from elsewhere, but really its a moot point as she got it! Just so very lucky to find it as she has a very thick coat...and hates being picked up.

I had less ticks this year, only had one or two on my horse....I was lulled into thinking the girls were doing their job!!

K Spot... my dogs weren't all always good with the chickens! I came home one day to find one of my Belgiums 'playing' with one of the girls, he was trying to pull her tail feathers out and she was just sitting there! I was horrified, and then the other one, not long after he moved in with us attacked Onslow once, he was smacked for that and they have done nothing since (I wonder if he attacked Onslow as she turned out to be a rooster?!) - the girls even come onto the deck and sneak into the kitchen (tiles I hasten to add) and have a snack with the boys in the mornings! All very harmonious here!

My horse did accidentally tread on one of then ages ago... she usually looks but Wonky moved. I raced her off to the vet with a squashed foot as I was certain I could see bone sticking out...it turned out that a bit of 'feel better bread' I gave her in the cage had gotten stuck to her foot and looked like a bone. The vet and I so giggled...

My Dalmatians have very high prey drive so I don't think training it out of them will be an option. They love to chase any small critter that moves, be it chickens, possums, plovers, doves etc.

They've never been exposed to chickens either as this is my first time. My dogs are 8 and nearly 6 years old.

With this latest loss, I'm thinking I'm going to have to make the fence higher, which is an expense I don't want but will probably have to happen.
Thank goodness pretty much all my other girls have big butts and really can't get that much air time at all.

Glad to hear Afro is doing better - let's hope for a speedy recovery!

K spot, is it possible to just bend the top of the wire inward so it's harder to fly over? Or just run a wire around the top on the inside, set in a little bit?

My run is connected to my horse paddock - it's a post and rail with chainlink around it, with 2-3 foot high chicken wire attached to the chainlink on the inside. Does that make sense?
My husband wanted the horse paddock and chicken run to be the same height and made out of the same materials, because he wanted everything to blend in together and be uniform. Possibly not the best idea for the girls.

I'd have to attach more chicken wire (or similar) to the top of the fence then bend it in. Nevermind though, I'll work something out.

I love Dalmatians. I have always wanted one, but we never got one because of their size.
Sorry about your losses.
