Okay new layers question. Our older hens worked out the nesting box when they started laying because they also used to sleep in it when they were younger.

These new ones have never been inside it and despite showing all the right signs have yet to give us an egg. I have sent my son on an egg hunt and he didn't find anything but just wondering with all the garden they free range in if they would know to go back to the nesting box?

Should I be cutting back on their wandering till I know they are laying and are using the box or will they work it out because the older three use it (though not very often at the moment)?

I lock my POL pullets in the nesting shed I have for about 1 hr, just to show them where the boxes are and what goes in them.
Don't put food, just water in so they aren't distracted and put them in when there are some eggs already in the boxes or a hen in there laying one.

It seemed to stimulate my Ancona's into laying.

I have never kept them locked up Appps they learn from the older girls. I do have the odd new one that will lay on the ground below the boxes. I do have a lot of hens for them to learn from though.
All 12 marans are out now. 3 black and 9 wheaten. Waiting for the last 3 to dry before moving them to the brooder.

Just a newbie question on Intergrating. I am getting 6 day old chicks in 2 weeks, so I was wondering when is the earliest little chicks can spend a little time outside with supervision in a confined area? As I am wanting to start my girls use to the little ones as soon as possible. Also thinking if its too cold letting them see each other through my back door. What do you think??
