Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

A question for chook. What would an under 1 week old maran sell for? Keeping in mind I don't really know the quality except the eggs were really dark? Now the reason I ask.. I seem to be on a roil with quail egg sales at the moment... Happy about that... A guy drove from Kingaroy which is about 1 and half hours a away or so on Saturday to get eggs. When he arrived I was cleaning the brooder. He asked about the chicks and what they were and if I would sell him one as he had a single chick hatch(sussex) a few days ago and it was lonely. I said no not really. Well we go look at the other hens I have and he buys 8 doz quail eggs, a doz welummmer and a dozen rir eggs. Then he says again could he buy a marans he would pay whatever I want.. So me knowing what people are like and how they don't really like to pay a fair price really, says $30... Thinking that would stop him asking... Well no it didn't lol. He bough the chick(a black one) and took it home. .Maybe I should have said $50 lol. Now let's hope I didn't sell the only girl lol.

It depends on the quality for me. If the egg they hatch from is less than a 4 on the Marans egg scale they are not really a Marans. I have bought Marans eggs before that I had to sell as cross breeds just on egg colour and also on feathering out too. But I've sold them anywhere from $20 to $40 for really good quality at that age. Mind you I usually hang on to them a week longer so I can sex them. I usually put a bit of food dye on the ones that hatch out of the darkest eggs and sell the rest on unless they are all nice dark eggs or if the kids choose one.

oh ok so not to bad then.. I think they were a 4 to 5 on the scale the lady said but I would have to look at a chart to see I guess. I am not sure how to sex the black ones but if I am right the wheatens should be lighter on the feather girls and darker for boys?

Croad Langshans lay a purple plum coloured egg in the ùk. There was another link to purple egg laying chickens that food not look like croads. ..

Yep that's spot on with the feathering... Here is a link to the colour chart too....

Thanks Chook. The black one i sold came out of the lightest looking egg and was the last one born so i guess i did ok then. I would say the one i sold came out of a 4 and there were 2 of them i think the rest i would say 5 to 6 looking at that chart.

Had to post this one too. Thor minding his babies. He just loves babies be it quails or chickens or ducks. He will sleep like that all day beside the cage for the first week they are outside. He is only 18 months old but has done this ever since i got him at 6 weeks of age lol.
