That's gorgeous Brockerk... you'll love the araucana and the salmon fav, silver laced wyandottes are sooooo pretty, I'm going to get some for my mixed pen too
My frizzle babies don't seem to be frizzling... I am going to get some chicks this time instead of hatching but these little guys are so friendly and cool. I'll go take photos in a bit!

I heard that if you cross a frizzle with a non frizzle you get half frizz and half not, maybe that's what has happened here.

I forgot who was telling me this ( I think it was Ash? ) but how do I make a real simple brooder for my chicks.
I think you said you can make it out of cardboard box and any normal light bulb?
Also, at what temp does my brooder need to be?

They are smooth frizzles that hold the frizzle gene but are not frizzle feathered. If you cross 2 frizzles you get a frazzle which is not good as they tend to have bad feather breakage and are more prone to disease etc. Normally you cross a frizzle and a standard and you will get on average 50% frizzle.

I will leave the cardboard one to ash to explain as I am far to paranoid to use cardboard as a brooder lol. I use an old fish tank with a lid hubby made that has the heat lamp as part of the lid. I use a thermostat to keep the temp regular. I set mine to 35c for the first week and then lower 5C a week after that.

Thanks Satay, I was wondering if they would carry the frizzle gene or not I have had bad experiences with heat lights so I use eco brooders or they are also called electric hens.. I almost cooked my chicks once and could have burnt my whole house down.... so I was willing to fork out the extra money for them. They are a bit safer to use in cardboard boxes too. I do have one with a globe in an old metal hot water unit cupboard but it is fixed in place. Just make sure it can't fall in the box and you should be right... I can't remember the temps coz I've had the eco brooders for a few years now. I remember seeing a chart on the net somewhere for temp in relation to age...
