Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I love this site. I have just started letting my ladies free range for a few hours per day. they are getting into my kale but have plenty to share. I have an australorp who is the piggy of the flock... cute to watch. we have lost a number of chickens from random deaths and neigbours dogs but they make me so happy. I rush home from work to see them and jump out of bed to let them out to start their day.

does melbourne weather get to cold for chickens? im relatively new to chickrn business

Welcomes, Chickens adapt well to temp changes so as long as they are fully feathered so not day old chicks they will do fine outside. It is currently 0.4c here at the moment and my 4 week old marans are outside on the grass, Stupid winter weather this year. Last week we had a couple of days of 15C to 30C for the day this week -1c to 25c yesterday and just above zero this morning. Qld girls bet you are glad you aren't out at Oakey the last few nights brrr. -6.5c yesterday morning. Yes Ash I know that's hot for you down there :p ;) (just teasing ya)

Lol I do have normal fruit trees too. I will try to list what I can remember I have you will see there is a lot of normal ones. 3 types of guava,2 types of grapefruit, 2 types of lemons, lemonade, mandarin. bananas 2 types, kiwi fruit, blueberry, boysneberry avacado, macadamia, limes, custard apple, mango and 2 types of fig and the others I listed before. oh red I forgot In my other list I have a pepino and 2 types of dragonfruit as well.

Oh your list reminded me. I've also not long planted a loganberry and a banana passionfruit on the chook run fence. I've got two more panels to cover so one will have blueberries in front of it and then I don't know what to grow on the last one. I'm thinking maybe a thornless blackberry.

Wow!! Now don't some of you guys have your own orchards growing or what?!

We only have Lemonade, Imperial Manadrin, Lisbon Lemon and Kaffir Limes growing at the moment. They've only been in the ground for less than a year, so fruit is a little while off yet.

We do have a well established Mulberry bush and 2 Mango trees, oh and a small Macadamia tree too.

THORNLESS BLACKBERRY!!!!!

So, I fully endorse the thornless blackberry. I've had them all my life and they are great.

I've got Mulberry, (lots of wild blackberry bushes of the thorny kind) apple, peach, golden gooseberry, sour plums, olive, passionfruit (that just won't grow taller than 1 ft) and fig trees. Also tomato's in Spring, if you count them as a fruit. Lots and lots of tomato's.

But seeing as we have cockatoo flocks pass through every year (and no netting seems to stop them) we are lucky to get a fig or two, lol.
