Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

The incubator is all fixed and running great :) saw a flow chart once for fixing things. It basically said : does it move? - Yes - should it move? - no - duct tape. Does it move? - no - should it move? - yes - w40. Etc. But this time it was Tarzan grip. :-D

how many chooks is a difficult question round here lol. The official answer is two but...
There are the two Plymouth rocks, my babies :)
400

then there's the quad of houdan that I keep at my partner's parents' house
400

then my young araucana crosses that I wish I could keep but can't have another room
400

then my little lavender araucana that is growing up to go in with my main two.
400

then those six chicks that were sold to me as yokohama and Sumatra
400

six Minorca babies
400

Plus thirty eight eggs in the incubator.
It sure is an addiction lol

Some very nice birds in the posts above. I just came in from a bit of Chicken TV! At dusk I go down and pick him up and put him into a night box I made. It is insulated and lined with carpet. Sits in the shade in the morning and afternoon. We let him out to join in with the ladies at about 8 or so in the morning once the neighbors have gone to work. We can't stop him making much noise during the day but at least he is quiet in the morning. Reducing down to one roo also made a big difference to the noise level. Has a vent in each side, 4 in the roof and a big one in the floor that lifts out for cleaning.
Do the vents let a lot of noise out too? I thought about a box for ours before we rehomed but couldn't work out how to give air but not let noise out

What about having pipes for vents that point down to the ground so the sound is directed to the ground?

That's how we did it. Still lets some noise out, but compared to a normal crow it's very quiet.

Bit of a pic bomb, here here are some more images. I do have a build thread on here too some place as I was putting it together.

Inside roof vents, the roof is double thick with an air gap in the middle

Little deflectors over the outside vents (all point down or to the back)

The floor vent outside is n a hinge, so we can sweep out the bedding easily.

Inside it has mesh covering the hole.

It was still a bit load, so I got some old carpet to line it and that really made a difference. Yard placement also is important for shade and noise deflection.

Overall, it's more work managing, but the crows and magpies are louder at night, and we get to keep our sweet roo for the ladies, at least until we can get our next hatch.

Thanks for sharing. Ill look up your build if I need one. I'm trying to talk myself into getting some faverolle eggs to hatch and seeing if I can somehow keep one rooster from the batch. Haven't broken it to hubby that's the plan yet though lol
