I have had chickens for quite a while now and have seen them do the strangest things over the years but this morning tops them all . I am sure you will all remember miracle my rescue chicken. She is the friendliest little girl and will come into the chook house and jump up on the nest boxes when I am cleaning them sometimes like she is there for a chat. Well this morning I was doing my usual clean out of the nest boxes when in she comes and decides she is going to sit between my feet. I tried to move a bit to do the next lot and she quickly jumped back between my feet. So I laugh and get on with what I am doing . Probably 5 minutes passed and I almost forgot she was there. When I was just about to go onto the next boxes to clean she jumped up looking straight up at me...... She had laid her first egg between my feet .. funny little thing. I picked her up and told her what a good girl she was.. Put her down and she glanced up and they ran back out to be with the girls outside eating.... Guess she wanted me to know she is laying now.. Funny little girl. I am glad she is so much better now and quite proud of my goofy little rescue girl.
Today has been a rough one. I had a chick, one of the four that were sold to me as Sumatra, that had hurt her leg trying to jump through a Window in her coop. I was keeping her inside in a cozy box where she could be warm and rest but she died this morning. I checked on her first thing, then went out to sort out everybody else, and by the time I got back she had drowned :'( she was pretty big, a couple months old, but just flipped on her back in the little dish of water and couldn't get up :'( I was only out for about fifteen minutes :-/
Also, found a nice home for my two araucana crosses from ash's eggs. A local guy has a couple cross breed projects and won't eat or separate them. So that's good. But I'll miss them heaps and so will purple, my lav ara that has been bunking with them till she's big enough to hang out with giraffe. I tried moving her in with the big guys and they were relatively fine with her but she was just trying to get back in with her buddies :-/ was heartbreaking to watch. I put her back for now. The guy is coming after work today to pick up the others. Emotional day. He's also buying all six Minorca chicks. Any suggestions for how to manage the ara separation?
So sad Pinky, sorry you lost your little one and I find it really hard to say goodbye too, (probably why I have sooo many chickens.) Your ara will adjust after a few days...
