Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks Chook, I don't mean to offend you, but I was hoping they would be a bit darker than that. Google shows some really dark reddy browns but I have found it's best to see what is being laid around as a gauge.

Thanks for sharing.

That's ok, I'm not offended. I've said to the breeder I was expecting the eggs to be a lot darker than they were, but I have two nice laying Wellies out of it for pets, so I really can't complain too much.
It's not like I'm going to be breeding from them anyway.

I have read that the dark eggs you used to be able to get aren't really around too much any more.

I know some US lines are dark, but I couldn't tell you if the colour can be compared here.

Well- after a generous Tax refund, I have decided to bite the bullet,
and have ordered an Rcom 50 incubator from Bellsouth.
Only problem is they are out of stock, and waiting on the boat from Korea to arrive...!!

Think colourful has wellies too maybe she scored darker layers. From what i have heard if they lay really dark it is usually because they have some marans mixed in the breed somewhere.as we don't have a lot of lines here in Australia.

Their i'll do as I please not what you want attitude sure makes up for a bit of loss of colour for me They are the best free rangers I have ever had. Found then down near the gully at the back of our place the other day having a great old time.

I only have 1 Welsummer hen and she hatched from a medium dark egg, about as dark as a store bought egg. I have a friend who only breeds Welsummers and her pullets aren't laying yet but they came from eggs just a bit darker and more spotty (so I have been told). I think one of the reasons the eggs are so light is because some breeders cross Welsummers with brown leghorns to stop them from being too inbred as they are not an overly common breed. My Welsummers and my friends are very different (I think mine are rather inbred) as mine are smaller and more sleek while her's are bigger and much more friendly. She also has some Barnevelders which I hatched out, but she's selling those as the hens are skittish and the rooster loves to take chunks of flesh off her hand at any opportunity. She ordered some more from a lady called Karen McCarthy but the eggs are lighter than store bought eggs and most are shaped like pullet eggs (you can't tell which end is the pointy one with out candling). I know older hens lay those eggs on occasion, but there were quite a few of them.

Finally, I know whether or not my silkie/pekin crosses are male or female (they have biggish red combs but no pointed saddle feathers and neither have ever crowed) as I got an egg this morning that couldn't belong to anyone else (it seemed too light in colour for even an Australorp, so at least 1 is a girl). YES!!!! I have the perfect broody machines!

I also had to brave a blackberry bush to pull one of my turkey hens out who has decided she was going to brood her 3 eggs. After being wing slapped twice, she went into the turkey coop and the eggs joined the others that will be going in the incubator on the weekend.
