I have to have some!!!!! Can I please see some pictures?? That is amazing.
Great quails as well!

Don't suppose anyone has bought an automatic door have they?

Im up at 7 but our coop isn't huge so by then the chooks are dying to get out. This morning I had a big fat faverolle hanging off the wire half of my door like a giant budgie and the silkie jumped off the roost about 30 seconds too early and hit the door instead of where the open hole would have been when I got the door open.

Starting to wonder if an automatic door opener might be an option?
My hens would peck me to death if I let them out at 7.
They are craving to get out at 6:15 when I let them out.

It's 7;00 here, but I don't suppose they'd care if I let them out any earlier...

In regards to the automatic doors,
I was considering them but after reading far too many Horror stories of chickens being locked out at night (Then Foxy Loxy taking a visit), or chickens being squished and killed as the door closes, I decided to not risk it.

Yes that would only make me worry, and I'd be back and forth checking on them anyway.
Anyway I have 6 pens the cost would be astronomical . I'm with you, don't think I'd risk it.

I was thinking we would still check each night when we collected the eggs but I don't like the idea of possible squished chooks!

No me saying he is scary has nothing to do with his appearance.....
Here are a few pics of my jap quails.. Does anyone know how to sex them?
Check on youtube, that's what I did and so long as they're above 5 weeks or so, I can always tell the difference. Boy's will have a bulge between the vent and under the tail while girls get swollen above the vent towards the stomach.

CB, your chicks look great!

I am using the motor as a door popper, (well setting it up anyway) my door is on a hinge, only opens the door, not closes it.

Seeing some of the guillotine type (like the first vid I posted) it would want to be reliable. I would prefer the side slide type if I could not have a hinge type.

Since we will only have this rooster for a couple more weeks though I am in no rush to finish automating our door.

This is the first one I was thinking of (car antenna side sliding)

I often leave the coop open at night and the chickens come out themselves in the morning. Obviously on a larger rural property there is a risk of predators but you don't have that in the suburbs.

Yea I am on a 200 acre property with foxes everywhere so there is seriously no chance of me leaving the coop open!!!
