Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

My backyard is now back to normal. One chicken coop with my 4 hens and one 20 week old pullet.
Friend's chickens went back home on the weekend and the roosters are in the freezer.

Update on my baby quails: out of the two I had to hatch - the little one didn't make it. I thought it was doing well, but then it got weaker and died.
The one with spayed legs made full recovery. It is smaller than the others, but doing well. 10 healthy quails in the brooder :)

I have 22 eggs in the bator now, from my birds. Fertility test, see how we go.

Good luck with your hatch. Sorry about the little one. It is much easier on the emotions if they don't hatch at all.

I also have just put a heap in the bator. The darkest ones are straight Australorp eggs. Strangely, I would say the other eggs are darker than they look in the photo, however, the Australorp eggs look exactly the right color.

Thanks for your feedback. Doesn't everyone have sussex? What age do you sell them at, cos aren't silkies hard to sex for a long time?

I sell fertile eggs, day old chicks and of course once they are old enough to sex, they are more pricey. Yes, most people have owned sussex at one time or another, but they are such reliable layers and there are so many varieties. Light, buff, coronation , speckled, silver, brown and even a lavender . Something for everyone!

Quote: haha, is it that bad.
Great chicks as well.

It's raining here, which is great.

Turkey pics!!! And while I was putting them up, more pictures snuck in... I tried to keep them out, but my cat gave my the big eyes.

Here are the cats, and that heat mat they'e sitting on? That's my laptop. You can't really see it but Leo, the Devon Rex on the right, has only one eye and is on a permanent diet due to his size. He's terrifying and the cat on the left is Tommy, my gorgeous little nutter that loves to take on the Dobemann when he's having a bad day... Both are inside cats, so no wildlife is harmed in return for their company.

Here are the ducklings, I have 1 crested, 2 Khaki Campbell, 6 Rouen-Clairs and 2 Welsh Harlequin. I have to clean out their cage everyday.

And here is my first ever turkey poult! It's very little and has a VERY loud peep. It's a cross-bred, so I didn't know what colour would hatch. It's name is Pipsqeak.

And here is the fluffy buff with the poult.

Okay, I'm done for now

GREAT CHICKS!! those little ducks look cold though?

And that last photo....racist chicks...

I have a question for all the knowledgeable and experienced people on this forum. A purely commercial question. What breed/breeds are the easiest to sell?

It really does depend on season, where you live etc.
But people always love small pet-like breeds. Especially silkies. They are the biggest beginner breed.

Fancy Chook!!!!!

Those photo's are amazing. I especially love the 1st one, all those bunnies and chicks.

Thanks Luke, the sun was out yesterday so I got some really nice pics of my Wyandotte 's and sussex, I will try and upload them this week.

Barnevelder ' s are very popular in Tassie, Paul Healey has been flogging them like a dead horse. I raised 2 dozen for my friend, their eggs are nice and dark, but they generally only lay every other day. The double laced are very pretty though.

Hey guys, when you're doing a staggered hatch, do you clean out the Hatcher before putting new eggs in it? That sounds like a silly question but I haven't left enough time between batches I guess and I still have a few latecomers and I need to put some more in but it's a little messy from the last few hatching. Should I try to wip the mat out, clean it and put it back? Or do you think they'll be fine?
