Is there a breed of chicken which are more accepting of new members to the flock? I got new chicks on the same day I removed 4 Roos and the chicks were put in a cage inside the main coop. On a couple of occasions a chick managed to get out (theyre now 9 weeks old) and the hens didn't seem to pick on it. Could this be because they were in disarray with members disappearing and new ones appearing at the same time. Would be interested to hear the opinions of experienced chook lovers.

I must say I'm a bit upset that you old members just seem to chat to each other, excluding a few, and not helping us newbies out. I'm new to this and am genuinely asking for advice yet seem to get looked over.

This is a general chat thread so basically like a big conversation between a group of people. If someone asks a question it won't get a reply from a whole heap of people saying basically similar things like it would in a thread in the relevant forum asking a specific question.
Just like a real group conversation questions tend to get answered by those who have experience or something new to add to the first reply then the conversation moves on as the group thinks the question was answered. If I ask a question and don't get much of a reply I just take that to mean nobody much here has much experience with the subject and I then go post it in the relevant forum for the whole forum to answer.
If you want some more info on hatching and raising chicks there is a whole section dedicated to that and you may find you get some good info if you also ask the question there or do a search there for other threads on the subject.

Sometimes a part of the conversation moves the thread along quickly and posts get missed. If I check this thread in my phone I it takes me to the last read reply. In my computer it takes me to the last post and skips all those between what I read last and it. What I'm trying to say is this group try's very hard to be inclusive of new members so I doubt there was an intentional slight. You may have simply asked and the board moved along and lost it or nobody had any more to add to the replies you got.

As a " rule of thumb " I keep the chicks and broody inside one of my main coops in an "A "
Frame hutch. For the first week I keep them confined so mum doesn't get distracted and leave anyone behind. Yesterday I let my week old silkies into the main pen, my little Silkie roo was so gracious . He pecked the ground for food and called the chicks. I have seen him standing on the roost at night , with chicks under him. " daddy daycare ". I'm not sure that there is a " more accepting " breed, but they all have their own little idiosynchrosis.
If the newcomer s have enough space , they can avoid confrontation .

Hey grigg, I hope this hasn't put you off. It's hard being new, especially when you're stressing About something.

Anyway, how are the chicks doing? Are they Plymouth rocks or adopted? Sorry if you've already said, I miss whole chunks of posts sometimes when there's blot to catch up on. I'm a big fan of Plymouth rocks. :-D just realised you said you had a Araucana roo, is he the dad? That would be a cool mix. I just bought some "Cuckoo Araucana" eggs that I'm a bit dubious about as they're actually just crosses but sounds like with that combo, you'd have a great start for something like that.

Can't quite get a pic but giraffe (my roo) is standing guard at my hammock :-D if I look over the edge, his face is right there. I <3 him

I can't remember if I've already posted but in case I haven't..

My marans babies I'll be picking which one I'll keep soon and separating her. Just waiting for princess emiko (the Yokohama) to feather up to go in with her. Any advice on how to pick which one to keep? Chookpatch, the other three are still yours if you want them, just may be a while before my partner is cool with them going. :-\

Sorry you feel like you are being overlooked. Sometimes that can happen without anyone meaning to. People have answered your questions, even if they did take while, so there is no reason to take offense. Feel free to join in more and ask more questions!
