Sad news for me. Went out yesterday morning and it was slightly raining as i left. Was gone quite a while when i got back both my pekins were dead. I am not sure what got them but i am guessing a fox as both the dogs were a sleep in our covered area. I found the girls torn apart down the back. Rip girls.

Sounds more like feral cats to me Satay.

Foxes ( mostly ) hunt at night, although they have been known to haunt places during the day on occasion. They are solitary creatures.

Not usual for a fox to venture into any area where they can smell dogs or dog droppings. There's always I guess the exception to the rule. However, I think if it had been a fox, it would have taken at least one chicken right away from your home, and maybe even come back to carry away the 2nd chicken - for food in it's den. A fox will usually only attack something smaller than it, or that it knows instinctively, will not or cannot fight back. I don't know what size dogs you have, but if small, then a fox would not be too afraid of them. He/she would have checked out your garden and shelters etc. previously. They are cunning and devious. But so are feral cats, which can grow to larger sizes than the domestic cat. I doubt though that a cat would or could carry away a chicken, perhaps having to scale a fence to do so ... even a small Pekin. Which makes me think - feral cat has done the horrid damage. As a rule, if I am going to be away for some hours, I lock my chooks up in their coop. Then I KNOW where they are. We have many foxes in our area ( Upwey, Victoria ) but many many feral cats as well. People let them go in the bush up here, believing they will be able to fend for themselves. And the cats learn quickly. Pity the idiots who let them go ( for whatever reason ) don't learn quickly enough.

So sorry for your loss.

Ciao .... AB.

Not good Satay :( Doesn't sound like a fox to me, nine times out of ten, they don't rip them to shreds they usually just leave the heads behind and take the bodies. Heads aren't edible by their young.
I don't have foxes in my yard, I have 2 very large dogs that do their business along the fence line not far from the chicken coop :)
But I never take that chance. I never let any of my animals out while I am not home. Including my dogs as I have one very large wedge tailed eagle that lurks around.
Hope you find the culprit soon :)

Thanks all. Thor is doing great Sam. No after effects thankfully. I have never seen feral cats here but you never know. I actually found them down the back quite a distance from the house yard where they usually hang with the dogs. My poor black girl i only found 1 leg and nothing more and my buff girl was all intact but had her wings ripped off. They were just the other side of the 8 feet high dog fencing that runs from one side of the yard to the other that i put in when we had the dog next door getting in all the time so my boys would not have been able to get past there to help them anyways, I normally open that when i go out but as it was raining i didn't bother.(another lesson learn't the hard way) On a brighter note i have 2 doz pekins eggs coming in the mail this week so hopefully i will be able to hatch a few more and keep a better eye on them this time.
