Oh that's sad Luke. Look on gumtree and see if you can pick up a couple of day old chicks for company.
I am just hoping more will hatch.
Tonight she will go under my broody so hen at least she will have a mum.
LUKE

You asked some pages back (I can't keep up with this group, it moves too fast!),
for some tech specs of my new Chook Palace.

OK - foundations are 3 m by 2.4 m treated pine sleepers
(because that is the sizes they come in - saves time cutting wood.
They will only last 30- 40 years as against 100s of years for concrete, but probably long enough to see me out.
Dig them in level.
How thick are these sleepers? rough prices?
Bolted on top we have frames made from 70 x 35 mm NON-STRUCTURAL framing pine
Bunnings sells this about half the price of standard framing timber- it's good enough for chook houses!

Roof and walls are second hand corrugated iron sheets.
I couldn't recommend more my new Dual saw - cuts through tin like a hot knife through butter!
I am planning using palates for the sides and back of my breeder pens, would these work do you reckon? I'm going to have a 0.5cm gape between each.
I screw everything together with tech screws and roofing screws. - If you ever have to move it, it all comes apart in sections.

Hope this is of some help.

I would also recommend you get a book on basic house framing- the principles are the same for any structure you build.

Very helpful thanks Ash.
I have already got an idea of what I want with some plans.
Could I run them pass you? I have all the materials just want to see if you think they will be appropriate.

Luke - pallets will work - but I suggest you make your walls two pallets high.
(Never build a chookhouse you can't stand upright in!)
You do need a foundation as pallets will rot away fairly quickly. treated pine sleepers are 50 x 200 x 3 m, or 2.4 m.

. Lol pinkys monsters are the white rocks that came from her BPR (she lost her roo if you remember.) and Ash has these and named them "Pinkys Monsters" term of endearment I reckon but also because they are unsusal from barred Plymouth rocks
They are "recessive white" Rocks from two Barred Rock parents.
I will try to breed a line of White Rocks from them, and also cross them back to improve my own line, as the parents had excellent barring.

I hope everyone who has been in this heat attack in Qld and Northern NSW have come through it unscathed. It has easily been the hottest day since I have lived here-7 years. My chooks came through ok, with the help of a lot of hosing throughout the day.

Unfortunately i lost a black aussie girl and another quail. Almost lost my buff cochin roo.. Finger crossed he pulls through. I have never lost an animal to heat in the 7 years i have been here and despite all my hosing etc they were dropping like flys. Poor kspot lost a hen too.

I am so sorry Satay. :hugs It was just an evil day!!!!!!!!! Must have been like a furnace at your place.

Quote: Oh yeah. That is weird how that occurred. So it was just a throw out.

Quote: Ok great. I will put some drawings up and some measurements.
I have to put mine on stilts as I am on the side of a hill and flooding is common.
I will only be using pallet planks for my sides and back. I am using hard wood for all my structural construction and all soft wood is coated in sump oil.

Quote: Recessive White? As in a random throw out? If you breed with them won't they still have the barred gene and get half barred and half white?
