Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I hope everyone who has been in this heat attack in Qld and Northern NSW have come through it unscathed. It has easily been the hottest day since I have lived here-7 years. My chooks came through ok, with the help of a lot of hosing throughout the day.
You have a heat wave, and down here it is bloody freezing!
13 degrees with a south westerly gale this morning.
Highest temp for the day was 17 degrees!

. I hope your rooster pulls through.
Your poor Cochins must have really been hot with all their feathering. I've always wondered why chickens don't just molt in Summer.

Unfortunately i lost a black aussie girl and another quail. Almost lost my buff cochin roo.. Finger crossed he pulls through. I have never lost an animal to heat in the 7 years i have been here and despite all my hosing etc they were dropping like flys. Poor kspot lost a hen too.

Oh Satay. I'm so so sorry to hear this. I lost one of my Aussies last year to heatwave. Hubby saved me from having to discover my girl. Pray your Cochin is ok.

Oh yeah. That is weird how that occurred. So it was just a throw out.

Ok great. I will put some drawings up and some measurements.
I have to put mine on stilts as I am on the side of a hill and flooding is common.
I will only be using pallet planks for my sides and back. I am using hard wood for all my structural construction and all soft wood is coated in sump oil.

Recessive White? As in a random throw out? If you breed with them won't they still have the barred gene and get half barred and half white?
No - if a gene is recessive you need two copies of it for the gene to express.
Therefore if it is recessive, all the white chooks have two copies of the gene and all their progeny will be white.
Pinky's Barred rocks must have had one copy of the gene each because 25 % of their progeny were recessive white.
(50% would have been like their parents - one copy of each gene, and the last 25% would have had two copies of the Barred gene.
Classic genetics!

Of course if I cross them with MY barred rocks all the progeny should be Barred, unless some of MY rocks carry one copy of the white gene.
Oh ok. I get you.
Yes so it's just like eye colour, you can have the gen for blue eyes but have green eyes and then so does your partner and then your offspring get blue eyes.lol.
So not all Barred rocks have the white gene?
Can you get Barred rocks with a black gene?

yeah they do suffer from the heat quite a bit. I had them in the green house with the sprinklers on most of the day.
