Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I'm going to take you up on the leghorn challenge hahaha I reckon I'll learn to love them like the RIR hehe.. I'm 28 but still I'm a big kid at Christmas and like something to open! Haha it's allll gooood.. Funny enough the professionally built chicken coop and chooks were their presents! They've both wanted chooks for years so when they were away in September I had a professional builder come build the enclosure to match my mums pride and joy, garden and then the chooks to go with it obviously haha mum tears up almost weekly ever since saying it's the best present she's ever ever been given and dad adores the coop too.. I still got them little presents each to open Christmas morning though lol so was a tad awkward but I totally made them pay for it when I cut loose on their credit card:D

I bet you will love them

!! ( I hope.lol. )
I don't think I will ever get over opening presents. It's just such fun!
Wait so you have only had chickens since September???
That is such a great present!!
hahaha, bet they would have been wonderfully happy with that.lol.

Leghorns are rather flighty. I've not found my lot to be extremely keen to escape from the coop.
Great pictures!!
Blue lorps are so pretty.

So leghorns take to confinement well? I always thought not. I let my girls free range the back yard and have to watch the adventurous ones don't escape. My neighbours are good they have tolerated the occasional indiscretion on the escapees part.

We used to have leghorns when I was a kid. The last few I knew got a bit bedraggled - lost a lot of feathers like the hybrids. Is that normal? Or might they have been crossed?

Cheers

Quote: It really depends on the individual but in general no Leghorns are not fond of confinement, they are flighty. Mine are not though, they are very calm.
I'm not sure, perhaps they where old. Yeah could have been crosses. The most common commercial layers in Aus used to be White Leghorns over Australorps.

Only had my own since then yeah! Crazy ha! Clearly i became super obsessed verrrrrry quickly hahahaaaa.

I house sat for 3 months from May last year and they had chooks :) learnt verrrry quickly!
Chicken math is crazy!!
To me I only have 2 chickens but in the 'real world' I have 10 hens and a rooster.
Are you planning on getting more?

My sussex chicks are a week old already, taken care of by a beautiful Blue Australorp Lizzy.
The youngest chick hatched under Lizzy last Saturday, and I am a bit worried about her (the chick that is). I don't see her eat or drink like the others, and she is always under mum.
I hand fed her some mushy food a few times and made her drink some water.
Any other suggestions?

One of the reasons I decided to hatch some chickens other than hatchery hybrids is I want my own broody! Never had one.
Unfortunately Lizzy is not mine

Hey Red, is Lizzy getting up and scratching around with those chicks or just sitting on the little one all the time?
