REXY!!!
Check this site out. They reckon they have BUFF MARANS!?!?
http://www.freewebs.com/chookloop/

Thanks Luke, I have seen that site. There is no such thing as "Buff" Marans. The colour is Black Tailed Buff Marans, and it is a close relation to Wheaten. Do you like them? I get a BTB Marans cockerel pop up out of one of my hens now and then. Satay will probably end up with one.

Luke I usually dry hatch most of the time as it too humid here the pump hardly ever goes off.
For.moulting hens Chilli is good too. I use. Vaseline or I dunk their feet in vegetable oil for mites.

Hi Satay, hope your foot is feeling ok. How're the babies going? Mine have started hatching, got 8 so far.

My poor girl who's being treated for a prolapse vent has started loosing her feathers around the area, I am not worried about it for now as it will help keep the area clean. Once she is fully back to normal what's the best protein to help grow new feathers, cause the poor thing is going through a molt too. I know cat food is good but have to be very careful because of the salt levels in it. Is there an alternative to cat food that helps feather growth??
You should be able to buy Meat Meal at your local feed store. It's 50% protein and you add it to your layer feed if you need high protein.
I was adding about 1 Kg meal per 20 kg bag of coarse layer Mash because I used to get fine but they ran out for a couple weeks. You may just want to check that amount though.
Good Luck.

Quote: Ok, thanks.

Quote: Ahh, the good ol sump oil.
I used it once and it just gets on all their feathers and takes till next moult to get out.

Can you PLEASE talk me through a dry hatch and how it's different to a water system one?
There seems to be pages and pages on this subject and all it seems is you just don't use the water? That can't just be it?!?!?

Quote: Perhaps that is what they meant.
I have seen these BTB's before and was confused. I thought it was someones failed attempt at FWM's.
Going to have to say not a fan, although I have only been looking at the Google images ones. They seem more orangy, like a hatchery grade New Hampshire Red.
Prefer our Wheatens, Coppers and blues

Well now, I've learnt about Vicks and then chillies for a moult.

Do you know what the chilli does Satay?

Vicks by the way is great for sunburn on humans - weird but it takes the burn out.

Rexy, do you have Wheaton and other colour Marans? I just love the personality of my Wheaton girl and that of her sister before I lost her.

Cheers

Yes it also has a soothing affect on the chooks legs. It's very messy to apply but when they dust bath , the dirt sticks to the Vicks and really smothers those little suckers. I've tried spraying with cooking oil,( not viscous enough ) , castor oil, ( same ), WD40, ( didn't enjoy the smell ) I made up my own potion last time.
To a tub of home brand vasoline I added a bottle of castor oil, several drops of rose oil and a teaspoon of orchardists sulphur. It made up just enough to do all of my birds. Works well, for me it has to work in one application I don't have time to wash and scrub the feet of 50 chickens and then reapply weekly.

Aaaw, beautiful babies everyone!

Good to hear Wilma is doing so well Megan. I agree, that little bit of plastic surgery has taken years off; she looks like she is having her second childhood :)

Before my Silkie chicks hatched I tried giving Cilla and Dusty a watermelon; not interested, in actual fact they were scared of it! Now the chicks are 13 weeks old I thought I would try them on watermelon .. guess who loved it and taught the big girls not to be afraid of it? They were all chomping into it yesterday :)

Frogee Update!
Mumma frog has been back twice since my first post so I now have 3 rafts of eggs! After a trip to my absolute favourite place yesterday (Bunnings

) they now have their own frog pond off the side of the goldfish pond. The little black spots in the first raft are definitely getting bigger! Woo hoo

They are going great rexy. I have forgotten how to sex them I think. Is it black wing tips on the males? If that is the case I have a lot of females but we will see in a few weeks.

I don't do it any different Luke it is just that our humidity up here is in the 80% range most of the time so my incubator never needs to add water.. Dry hatching is not adding water til lock down.

Yay I love frogs... Not the noise so much after rain out here as they go off but generally love them.

I can't really remember I think it was something to do with chilli warming the body which tended to help with the feathers growing back in quicker. I have two large chilli bushes so in throw a few in every now and again.
