Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Luke, with leg mites you pretty much know when they've got them. My problem is sparrows, they come and go freely, landing above my birds and dropping lice on them. The one mistake we made when we built the breeding pens was to use the regular size chicken wire. If we could have that time again, we would use the small gauge chicken wire. We may even redo the outside wire. Of course I haven't broken that news to hubby yet.

Yeah I know when the hens have got them, but how do you know when you've got rid of them? Don't you have to wait till next moult for them to get new scales???

We have little LBJ's here ( little brown jobs ) and they are tiny. I hope they don't have lice.
Why can't you rewire? or is it a HUGE job?

It certainly will reduce the feed bill Fancy, all smiles here. These guys were out everyday free ranging though and there is no shortage of greenery here. I didn't get a bad price for them either considering how much they were costing to feed :)

The crustyness falls off to reveal smooth legs within weeks. When mine have mites they spend a lot of time bent over picking at their own legs and scratching . It's not that big a job 10 m x 5 m and 2 m high at the low point. Whites chicken wire is about $220 for 50 m. It's really just not on our list of priorities ATM . We have a 4 day showjumping comp next weekend. Apart from our daughters competing we also ' volunteer ' to run the canteen. I start shopping tomorrow for food and have a ton of drinks to buy in. The girls will also do a 2 day clinic with a mainland coach. So for now my chooks will have to be happy with what they have. I will endeavor to get some pics of my pens , but were off to a BBQ now, cheers! P.s the weather here is just perfect today.

My Barnies started at 14wks my Marans at 10 months. I had been letting them free range too much and they were getting too many greens not eating their protein. I added some soy meal or meat meal (can't remember which) to their diet and limited the greens. I had eggs in 5days.

But it is hot -don't expect too much from them.

Depends on the breed I find. My wellies were about 8 months and my cochins over a year. My marans laid at 18 weeks.

Well now, I've learnt about Vicks and then chillies for a moult.

Do you know what the chilli does Satay?

Vicks by the way is great for sunburn on humans - weird but it takes the burn out.

Rexy, do you have Wheaton and other colour Marans? I just love the personality of my Wheaton girl and that of her sister before I lost her.

Cheers

Just wheaten and blue wheaten, MyHaven. They do have a very laid back personality. Although I think that varies with the line you have.
