As the others have said, definately a silkie cross. I'd say probably with a seabright or OEG. I have a few that cool hairdo.

Hi Satay, probably should have sent personal but wondering what chook food (non pellet) that you use. I am going to ring my stock feed place today about some of the suggestions from others and was just wondering if you have a brand of layer mash you would reccommend. Also has anyone got some black frizzle adult pics they can post or directions to thier albums. Thanks

I make my own for the most part Qld chook We have a grain place down here that go in and buy the grains myself and mix it in a cement mixer.. For the marans I use laucke mills Show bird breeder. Not much help I guess as that is in pellet form. I used to use Barastock top layer mash til I started to make my own. My cousin uses Darling downs layer(Barastock brand also) for her hens. She has far less than me though lol. I also use chick starter and grower and gamebird starter for the quails by laucke mills as well. I find it really is the best you can get for young ones. Not always easy to find in some places though.

Thanks heaps Satay, I will check out the Barastock. What 'recipe' do you use for your own mix? With the humidity & mould factor, if making my own, I would probably do in a maximumum of 40kg lots. They free range 50% of the time but I want to know that I am providing all nutritional requirements in case I do need to keep penned for any extended period (eg- if away & other person looking after, I prefer they stay in coop).

I really don't follow an exact one as such. What I do is I have a list of the % protein in each grain.. Then I go in there and see what they have. As it is a big transport place as well(grains are brough in by the truck load and sent all over Australia as well) it depends what grains are there when you go in. I buy around the 100kg to 150kg of grains. Then I come home and work out how much of each grain I need to put in the mix. I aim for 17% plus in protein in the over all mix. I hope that made some sort of sense lol. It averages about normally to just under 50c a kg for the mix once finished.
Some of the grains may include sorghum, maize, sunflower, corn, soy, wheat barley and others that I can't remember right now lol.
I store the finished mix in big blue drums that have clamp shut lids.
