Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi,

I am from Adelaide, used to have 3 hens until they all died last Sunday. Got a picture of my girls and the run in my “Hello from SA” introductory thread.

Am waiting until the weather cools down to rebuild the coop bit bigger and better—any good designs for our weather? (heatwaves)

Any good places in Adelaide to buy chickens (was given this first lot) like two like my two brown ones and maybe two barnevelders?

Welcome - Shade is the most important thing.
Build under big deciduous trees. Use silver foil insulation under roof and west facing walls.
(Silver side facing out) - Have lots of wire fronts and sides for flow through ventilation

Saying that , I have never in 45 years lost a chook to heat - even on Black Saturday with 47 degrees and flames licking
the back of my chook houses, I didn't lose a single one.

I suspect another cause for your deaths..

Have a look at some of my chook house photos on this thread.

Great advice Ash. Lots of ventilation is the key. I lost a few chickens this year to heat and it is the first time in 7 years I have been here that I lost any. You can only do your best for them. Lots of shade, good ventilation and a way to cool down.

Luuuuke I do live in the city but I sell the chickies to family and friends who have fallen in love with mine hehe I got enough room for them though mum lets them run rampant and free range in the garden and they are out whenever someone is home which is almost all day every day.. 34 eggs in the bator and $120 worth annnnnd there's like 2 fertile.. I'm spewing!
