Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I'm going to try to show mine at the royal melb show this year if I can organise myself. I'm still getting a few nice eggs but most of my Marans are moulting. I posted some of these pics on some other pages but the dark olives are from some of my new pullets. My Marans eggs here are around a 4 according to the American Marans charts I have. The darkest I've seen is a 6. I can't wait for the new pullets to start laying :)

Thanks heaps, save me the next best two ;)

Stunning egg colour chook :)

Congratulations and solicitations wherever appropriate. Finally getting there - that roofline is difficult! Some of Pinky's white monsters. My old Pekin rooster- always a gentleman. Some spare SQ Araucana roosters.
Pen is coming along great Ash:) Those ara boys are looking good too. Anyone that knows me well knows I adore pekins. They are just a beautiful breed and the roos are usually such well mannered gentlemen. Your old fella looks great Ash.

I know Aus ones are not that flash, but I spied the one in the bottom right corner of your triangle and thought "I hope we are near there" We hatched from some about a 5 on the Maran scale, some were better than others. We have A BV that does ok and a Wellie that should lay a nice shade too, but our hopes are on the Maran for the darkest.

I'll be interested to see what colour your wellie lays ben. I only have 2 left of mine now and I was not pleased at all with the egg colour they laid. Never did get one much darker than an Australorp egg. Could you post a pic of your bv egg colour if you have time. I would be interested to see how dark they are.

x2 My friend. Showing sounds like a awful lot of work for little or no reward. The closest I would get to showing would be to breed SQ birds and sell them to showers.
You know you have to RE-QUARANTINE a bird every time it comes back from a show.

Imagine taking birds from VIC to the Sydney Easter show, people do that. It must be horrible on the birds.

They lady I bought my pekins and duccles from has show quality birds. She show at all the major ones around qld and wins a lot. She said the prize money only covers fuel usually but she does it for the love of the breeds not the money and so people get to see them.

Ahh ok. You know in the US a 5 barley counts. They say 5 and below on that chart ( a very poor chart ) is not a 'proper' Marans. I am not sure what the Aussies go by though. Is their even a Aus standard for Marans? I have never head of anyone showing them.

BV?

We can't compare our marans to the us ones really luke as our gene pool is just too small. I think if we are aiming for good colour I think the ones chook has is up there with some of the best I have seen in Aus, I am happy with mine so far. I always though marans weren't that good a layers but I am thrilled with mine so far they are averaging 6 eggs a day from 7 girls :)

Those eggs are so gorgeous! Isn't it funny how excited we get over eggs, something other people take for granted haha, I do that with raw beef too, I'm Italian background and LOVE cooking! But it's all about the quality of the ingredients so when I have and gorgeous, healthy and good quality piece of meat I just stare at it for ages hahaha and my eggs and veges that we grow I always have on display haha.

Does anyone know what i do with this? I got the laydies some garlic granules because it's always said to be good for them, but do i feed it to them?

wasn't sure they'd eat it or like the taste but thinking about it my girls eat EVERYTHING! Hahaha I'm headed out to brave the rain and clean their coop now so some garlic granules can keep the sticky beaks occupied for a while lol

Quote: Yeah I know, but it's just so annoying going on the the Marans threads and seeing how much darker their eggs are

.lol.
Yeah Chooks really are great!
I find my Marans lay more than the Langshans, which is good.

Thanks Satay

Where did you buy this from Sydney?
Just some information, chickens don't have the same taste buds as us humans. They can't taste 'hot', I have fed whole chillies to my chicken before and it doesn't bother them at all, but it does get rid of those parasites.

Hey I have a Dominique rooster I'm sure he is but I haven't found any others in aus
I need to re home him as I'm not allowed to have him dose any one know anyone who would like him he is friendly
