Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Wow oz-e-chick! I always wonder if people's pet snakes are thinking 'just wait until I get big enough, you are going to be delicious' while they cuddle up to their owner because all reptiles eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Or maybe that's just my misperception because of sheer fear. I was optimistically hoping that the snakes were slowing down for winter. :(

I see your getting pretty good with that camera. Nice pics.
Thanks, but all these pictures are taken on just Auto or pre set settings.
I have figured out aperture. lighting and shutter speed on this camera but still have some more experimenting before I get 'arty'.

Beautiful birds Luke. ... I'll stick my hand up to buy some eggs when they are laying if you are planning on selling some

Congrats on your hatch satay, I've got to put some chick pics up soon, all my little human babies have been sick for the past two n a half weeks and now my youngest has swallowed a coin a few days ago so I'm waiting on him to poop it out...wooo hoooo!
Thanks.
Your into Yoko's?? Cool !
I have just made a new thread for lontails and it has yet to get any replies, perhaps you could jump in.

Well it does depend on where you live, but yes POL breeds apart from Hylines/ ISA's/ Sex-links are fairly hard to track down.
You may have to hatch some of your own eggs using a broody or incubator or buy chicks.
Where abouts do you live?

It costs a lot to feed a chicken to point of lay. Most of us that breed sell them much younger for that reason. There are some that sell point of lay though. You may just have to look around a bit more.

And I usually get attached by the time they are point of lay so it gets harder and harder the older they are before you sell them... sometime I feel like I'm doing a background check on the buyers to make sure they are going to good homes lol but it seems to me a lot of farms that sell point of lay hens are mass producing and the birds don't get handled like they do from a small farm... but it all depends on what people want their chickens for. Some people just want chickens for eggs and that's all. Ours are pets that just so happen to be beautiful rare breeds as well. But I can say with confidence that every little chick hatched here has been snuggled on the laps of small animal obsessed children

where abouts are you deebeeoz? Someone on here must be near you or know someone near you

Mine too chook. I sell pol at $50 each, but only after I've done a police check on the buyer.

. Just kidding, but I figure that anyone that is prepared to pay $50 for a hen , wouldn't dream of eating them. Mine are free ranged and I'd prefer they go to homes that can accommodate their lifestyle . My hubby does call me the crazy chook lady !
Thankyou all for your honest replies. I have 2 hyalines now that are a bit over 18 months old. They haven't layed an egg for about 6 months! I guess I am just impatient for egg layers. My girls are pets too, they have a nice run and come out to free range in my back yard until the sun comes right over and they head back to their shady tree in the run. They haven't stepped foot in their nests for months. :( They are definitely NOT intended for eating lol. I'm in Bunbury in the south of WA. The places I have contacted haven't replied, apart from one that has chickens about 5 weeks old. Hubby would prefer I just went and bought eggs from the shop to cook with, but I really enjoy having my girls. I am eager for POL chickens but hubby did point out we've had chickens of that age for the last 6 months that haven't laid so what's the difference.

I feel like this is a dumb question but what is a run and do I really need one for ducks? We built our ducks a shelter but being as we live in sydney and have a decent size yard and high fences and our own cats n dogs so no neighbouring animals come into our yard I dont like to lock thme up at night and they make so much noise and protest. Most nights they sleep under my garden box or nder the stairs where I put some hay. I guess my question is does their sleeping conditions sound ok or should improve them?

So long as your ducks have clean water , food and shelter they'll do fine. A run is usually only if they cant range. If yours have the run of your yard they'll be happy. :thumbsup
