Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi, I got my chicks from http://www.heritagehatchingandhens.com.au & am very happy with them. They have speckled sussex chicks in stock for $15 but their pullets are pricey. They 90% guaranteed mine would be girls but I got the utility layers & I don't know if they do the same for pure breeds.  They are near Waco which is on your side of Brisbane.  Their feed prices are the best I've seen too although I'm on the Northside so it's a bit far for me.  All our local farmer feed stores seem to have closed in the last few years so I'm curious where everyone else in this area gets their feed from if not from Petbarn or CityFarmers.

Thanks... I was hoping to get some pullets/hens so that he had some girly companions straight away... I will get chicks if I can't find bigger girls... But my lovely roo will have to wait a while for a little female attention if that's the case ;-)

Welcome!

I've looked at their site too and though my gosh, those pullet prices are quite dear.

I buy my feed from my local produce store, they are a family run business; friendly with good prices.  I'm happy to support the locals :)

The more the merrier!  The black utility layers I got were given to me by a friend.  Seems I've become the place to take your unwanted hens, as my Light Sussex hens were given to me as well.

Just be mindful of quarantine . Even your friends birds could be carriers of MG or coryza. Bio security will save your flock!

Good choice ! I love my dots.

@Fancychooklady whats a reasonable quarantine period, do u think? I've kept newbies separate for 2 days... Is that long enough?

I don't bring adult birds in anymore, but at least 4 weeks preferably 6 . Mycoplasma and upper respiratory disease symptoms can take that long to rear their ugly heads. A carrier of these diseases may only show symptoms when stressed out. In 4-6 weeks of observing you should know if anyone has runny noses or breathing issues. Also gives you an opportunity to deliced and worm . Lice are like nits in kids you need to treat 10 days apart as with most wormers.

Good news - I think my little Dorking is nearly all better and just about ready to go back in with the others. The swelling in and around her eye is almost completely gone and she's no longer getting pus or build up.
She'll never see out of that eye, but I'm sure she'll adapt just fine. She's become a real pet, being waited on and and foot for nearly 2 months. I'm just so happy seeing her on the mend

Me too. I can't say no to a hen that needs a home. Purebred or otherwise.:)
