Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I don't now if anyone else has come across it, but I have just found and purchased 'Mini Bales' of straw for my nesting boxes.

I only have 5 bantams and 3 x nesting boxes so the nesting material lasts a long time and does not need replacing often. I used to buy bags of straw from the Produce Store, but not having a car anymore (different story) I am having to rely on what I can order on-line or within walking distance. I look like something out of 'The Good Life' walking down the road with my garden trolley to pick up a 20kg bag of feed .. all I need now is a goat to pull it!

While I can get my feed within walking distance, no access to straw anywhere :(

So, after confirming they are safe for chickens, these 'Mini Bales' arrived today. Looks pretty good!

Quote: 'Mite guard is added to keep your animal's bedding free of any nasty parasites' ... it will be interesting to see how it goes.

At $9 a bag, obviously not economical for everyone but, with a small flock, suits my needs nicely and it gets delivered to my door :)

Don't worry it takes them a while to get their mojo on . I still occasionally find one in the poop under the perch. At least you know that laying has commenced.

My Silkie, Tina, laid her first egg at 7pm the other night, dropped from the lower roost onto the coop floor and cracked.

She went into 'I am going to lay an egg' mode at 05:30pm last night and plonked herself down in the middle of the lawn.. sat then until bed time and then went to bed. I'm thinking great, she is going to lay her eggs at night (sarcasm intended)! But this morning, still no egg and she is under the coop, threatening to lay there!

I went and checked on her later and she was in the nest box and half an hour later, her second egg arrived safe and sound in the nest box....looks like she is getting her mojo worked out now

Seems the troubleshooting worked.

Well done Tina!

I am excited as 3 of my girls are now laying.

I'm confident on knowing two, but I don't know who the third is.

It's either our barnevelder or polish, but I expected a darker egg from barnevelder or a lighter egg from the polish but it was neither really..

Bottom egg in this pic..
