I sure hope my gals live to be a good age; 9.5 years is pretty darn good!

I wormed her 5 days ago.

Some other people have suggest maybe cankers.

They have suggested some medication that i don't think is easily avail in australia.

Has anyone had success treating this?? Or am I going to have to take her to the vet. I want this as my last option as many bets I have been to do not know anything about chickens and their solution always seems to be to put down :( (from previous experiences)

hahah, you lot really don't trust me. There are no tricks here.

A few months a go a successful importation syndicate of several rare breeds were brought into Australia. It was all in the last Australasian Poultry mag.

So here are some pictures of the thriving, healthy birds. I don't think they are laying yet but next year they might have some eggs for sale to breeders.
Each breeder that has these birds has to work up to a strict husbandry and bio security regime.

Personally, I think they are a bit of a weird choice. I do like the Houdans though

My oldies are dropping like flys.. Yesterdays casualty was amazon my malay game. I am not sure of her age as she was given to me about a month after I moved here, The neighbour had her for a few years and she was given to her as a full grown chicken so my guess would be that she was anywhere from 9 1/2 up.. I found her passed right under a tree she used to love to sit under during the day. R.I.P big lady
Sorry about your chickens Satay

Well after my blrw copped a flogging from that nasty Sussex roo , I locked the culprit up. Yesterday he in the gale forced winds he got out. My poor king George was his victim this time. Covered in blood and one of the points of his comb missing. My Daughter and I brought him in , gave him a warm bubble bath and blow dried him while he lay completely lifeless in front of the fire. He is currently in a cardboard box ( that doesn't allow him to stand up) in the foyer , crowing his head off.
Time to take him out to his girls. Hubby gets home Sunday, then we will get rid of that rogue Sussex.
Fancychooklady,

Sussex....UGH!!! I have a sort of obsession for my Sussex and my hubby keeps me in check with them. Last year I got a Sussex roo, then later that summer a farmer gave me a Sussex hen. She was still in incubation period and appeared to get Maraks. She got a dropped wing, a blue eye & it appeared that she could not see. I gave her antibiotic, and kept her in the garage in an isolation pen. I let her out on the days that she seemed better. She lasted about a month and then died.
This spring I bought 4 hatchery sexed (girl) sussex chicks. LOL! We all know how that goes. 2 were roos & 2 hens. The 2 roos & 1 hen died. I am left with one 2yr old roo & one hen. The SS roo used to be very nice, could be held, good temperament. One day when I was walking out to feed them, he flogged my leg. So, I kicked him. Each day after that, he grumbled and acted aggressive. He is now in a big dog crate until next spring (Ohio) when I can breed him. My DH keeps telling me how "defective" this breed is, but I am still in denial.

EDIT: Cluckcluckluke,

I love the pics. The Dark Dorking looks grumpy! The Houdans and Pheasant Fowl are very pretty.

We've got two Speckled Sussexes, a brother-sister combo, all that hatched out of six eggs. They're now about 25 weeks old, and so far I think they've been really boring compared to our other birds. They seemed to suffer of a light case of cocci through the middle of the summer, something the rest of the flock never had any problems with. Especially the roo kept making very loose deposits. They are a lot less adventurous than our other birds too, and they've mostly kept to themselves up until now. Now, a few weeks ago, the rooster finally started crowing, and practicing mating (mostly his sister, and also an OE pullet we've got). They've also started to gain a bit of weight, and I have to admit, I'm starting to see them in a whole new light. This is how they looked a few weeks back, I'm starting to think they're actually pretty handsome birds.

And this is from today, after they've been allowed to enjoy the salad patch for a few days. Not much left.

Thanks everyone for the kindness at the loss of ama. She was a one of a kind for sure..
In other news i have bush babies. 9 of them. I busted mumma bantie a week ago down the back in long grass. I will post a pic later.
