Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Thanks all for the advice on lice a few weeks ago. I feel it's definitely slowed it down.
However ten chicks and counting have been hatched and I think they have lice. Would it be safe to rub the powder (pestone) on my hands and then rub it on to the chicks.
A friend told me that powder isn't good for them, but as long as they aren't breathing it in it should be alright? or will it burn them?

The best time to powder is about 2 weeks before hatch. While the broody is sitting on eggs . It's always a bit risky to dust little ones as it may cause upper respiratory symptoms . There are permethrin lice spray products on the market that are available at most pet shops. The other alternative is to give them a bath and blow dry. Be sure to replace the bedding and spray the boxes before putting new bedding down.

Pretty hens appps! Is that a mohawk on the one on the right? I have finally seen a chick! Snowy let them poke their heads out for a minute & then ushered them back under. I think there may have been one trying to get out from under her tail too. I saw Snowy eat a piece of hay so hopefully her appetite is returning & she will get up & feed properly today. :jumpy
:love At least you can relax now. Oh no you won't, you'll be awake all night checking on them.

Lol Fancy. The chicks have had their last check & only 2 were visible because it had cooled & most were under mum. There is no way I am going out into the dark & possibly meet a snake on the way to the run. Besides, I've been up since 4am so I think I'll sleep pretty well tonight.
Last pic for today.

I've seen six in total so feel pretty lucky. I also managed to get a couple of empty egg shells out & Snowy appears to have pooped in the nest at some point. I also found out what I could hear her pecking - ants. I was a bit suspicious that she had been eating her eggs seeing as she hasn't been off the nest since Thursday morning. Hopefully she will get OFF the nest tomorrow & I can change the hay & wipe it out a bit to deter them. She scarfed down some watermelon on the nest & ate some more hay so I don't have to worry I'm going to find an expired hen lying on the nest anymore, my biggest fear these last few days. I hope they all have a safe night. : )

As we in Ohio have gloomy, rainy, cold, wet weather right now, it is so awesome to see your wee ones hatching!

I am so excited for all of you.

Cwrite, do you have true araucanas? Around here they are extremely rare and expensive. There were some marked as araucana at the feed store this past spring, and I bought 4 or 5 of them. I later found they are Easter Eggers. I didn't know the difference and frankly, didn't care. I just want colorful eggs next spring

But when I did my homework and found they are rumpless and they have a gene that makes the tufts and 2 copies of the gene nearly leads to 100% mortality in the egg, I am so glad I do not have them!

Good hatching luck everyone!!!

Are ants a threat to the chicks? You know, just in case you had planned to sleep lol

JWB. I've got salmon favorelles. Similar bearded look though. What I'm hatching this time is some blue/black/splash Australorps.

They are beautiful appps. Yeah, I had to go back and edit my previous post because I wrote appps, then went back and realized it is cwrite who posted aracuana. Sorry! It's not even 5am here. Getting ready to go to work & just haven't had enough coffee.

JWB Australia groupings of 'those birds' are different. You have rumpless araucana's, easter eggers (cross breeds) & ameraucana's with tails from what I understand. We have no rumpless araucana's in this country & I no longer get confused because I asked about it at a local poultry show & one woman looked like she was going to have me arrested & check my home for signs of illegal birds!

Very scary, but I was so sure that there were araucana's here. We don't have easter eggers or ameraucana's, rather we have araucana's (which look pretty much like ameraucana's to me) and standards for them & the rest are just birds that don't fit the standard. I'm interested to see which American category mine fit into, but basically I just wanted blue eggs. That lethal tufted gene isn't my cup of tea either. : )

appps, I've already worried about that. Lol. However, I haven't mentioned that we now have 6 to my daughter (who can reach the top bolt) in case one gets carried off in the night by ants, or stood on, or a snake breaches the perimeter - although that might eat them all.

So I'm just glad that Snowy survived her extreme method of brooding & will see what tomorrow brings.

I think going by her track record I would be far more worried about one being carried off by your daughter lol
